Harlem, 1925. The jazz is bleeding out of the Savoy Ballroom and onto 125th Street, and the air smells like gin and possibility.

Marcus Delaney is twenty-two, black as midnight, and he can play *Elysium* better than anybody alive. He plays in the back room of a basement bar on Lenox Avenue, in a space that smells of mildew and marijuana, where a modified console has been rigged up with copper wires and vacuum tubes to create something the corporations didn't build: a shared virtual space where twelve players can occupy the same world simultaneously.

Twelve players. Twelve brothers and sisters from the margins of American life, building something the white world said was impossible.

They call themselves "The Uplift Chorus." The name comes from the old spirituals—the ones that spoke of climbing Jacob's ladder, of lifting the downtrodden into the promised land. Marcus chose it because *Elysium*, for all its promise of equality, was still America. And in America, the promised land belonged to people with blue blood and silver names.

So they would take it another way.

Marcus's avatar is *Delaney the Dawnbringer*—a class he invented himself, because the character creator offered only Warrior, Mage, Rogue, and Healer, and none of them captured what he saw in himself. *Dawnbringer* is a hybrid: part warrior, part bard, part strategist. His skills channel music into combat—literally. When Marcus plays, he hums under his breath, and the game registers the frequency, translating his melody into a buff that amplifies his teammates' abilities.

It is, by all accounts, magic.

The first time Marcus brought the Chorus to a server-wide battle, they were outnumbered five to one. A guild called *The Sovereignty*—mostly wealthy white players from the Upper East Side, playing in a private club in Manhattan—had invaded Harlem Server and was burning through the district's NPCs like they were tissue paper.

Marcus didn't say a word. He just started humming.

It was an old tune, one his grandmother taught him, about a river that runs from slavery to freedom. The game picked it up, translated it, and suddenly Marcus's teammates were moving faster, hitting harder, healing quicker. The battle turned in four minutes flat. *The Sovereignty* retreated. Harlem Server held.

And Marcus Delaney, kid from the projects who couldn't afford real college tuition, became a legend.

But legend doesn't pay the rent.

Marcus lives above a laundromat in a room so small he can barely stretch his arms. He eats rice and beans three times a day because the money goes to the console upgrades—better tubes, better wiring, better connection to *Elysium*, which is run by a corporation called Montague Industries. Montague is the same family that owns half the real estate in Manhattan and half the politicians in Albany.

Marcus hates Montague with the focused, precise hatred of a man who understands systems and knows how they're rigged.

*"The game is their world,"* he tells his teammates one night, after three consecutive victories that have drawn the attention of every major guild in North America. *"But we play it better. And that—that is the thing they cannot tolerate."*

His second-in-command, a fierce woman named *Evelyn "Evie" Cross* whose avatar is *The Architect*—a builder class that can construct fortifications in seconds—nods slowly.

"So what do we do?" she asks.

"We go to the championship," Marcus says. "The Grand Elysium. And we win it in front of the whole world."

The Grand Elysium Championship takes place in a ballroom at the Waldorf-Astoria. Three hundred players from across the continent, each playing from a dedicated station, while thousands watch from the galleries above. The air is thick with cigar smoke and the clinking of champagne flutes.

The Uplift Chorus plays from the basement bar.

They win the regional qualifier. Then the continental. Then they're heading to the international stage—the equivalent of the WEL, only called the *Pan-Continental Elysium Cup*, and it takes place in Paris.

*OTMES-v2 Code: [M1=7.0: Epic scope, M3=7.0: Conflict rising]*

In Paris, the Chorus faces teams from England, Germany, Russia, Japan. They face *The Sovereignty* again, who have recruited the single best player in Europe—a Russian mage named *Volkov* who plays with a cold, mechanical precision that makes Marcus's blood boil.

The final match comes down to this: Marcus's Chorus versus Volkov's team, in a deathmatch on a map called *New Zion*. It's a ruined city, all broken churches and shattered hope—the kind of map that feels like prophecy.

With thirty seconds left, Marcus's health is at 4%. He can't heal. He can't run. He can only hum.

And so he does. He hums the river song. He hums it so hard his nose bleeds. And his teammates—his beautiful, ragged, impossible team—move like they've never moved before. They defeat Volkov's team by a single hit point.

*OTMES-v2 Code: [M3=7.0: Climactic conflict, M8=6.0: Joyous resolution]*

When the announcer declares "The Uplift Chorus—" and the word hangs in the air like incense, Marcus doesn't celebrate. He sits in that basement bar, blood on his lip, tears in his eyes, and thinks about what they've done.

They haven't just won a game. They've proven something to every person who was told they didn't belong: *you belong. You belong here. This world is yours too.*
