The Unlikely Accidents

Rick Donovan was six-foot-four, two hundred and ten pounds of Ohio steel-town muscle, and his biggest worry in life was whether the credit union would approve his pickup truck loan. He worked at the ArcelorMittal plant in Youngstown, Ohio, where the air smelled like burning and the days lasted twelve hours and the pay was enough to keep a roof over your head and a fridge full of beer, but not enough to make you forget that you were working with your body instead of your brain.

The day the Army recruiter came to the plant, Rick was on his lunch break, eating a sandwich that tasted like everything else in the plant: metal and grease and something he could not identify but suspected was hope.

The recruiter was a small man with a big smile and a clipboard. He told Rick that during a routine physical, the Army's medical division had noticed something unusual about his test results. His VO2 max was off the charts. His muscle density was in the ninety-ninth percentile. He was, in the recruiter's words, "a physical anomaly."

Rick didn't understand most of what the recruiter said. He understood enough: the Army wanted to test him. Not for the regular infantry. For something else. Something special.

"Special forces?" Rick asked.

"Something like that," the recruiter said. Which was the first lie Rick would learn to live with.

They took him to Fort Bragg in North Carolina. They put him through tests that Rick had never experienced in a steel mill: obstacle courses, night navigation, hand-to-hand combat. Rick was good at them. Not skilled—good. Like a man who is good at breathing. He didn't think about it. He just did it.

That was the problem with Rick: he did things without thinking about them, and the people who were supposed to think about things for him kept mistaking his silence for emptiness.

Miles Calloway was the man who was supposed to think about things for Rick. Miles was twenty-nine, Yale-educated, and hired by the Pentagon as a "cultural advisor" because he had a master's degree in Middle Eastern studies and a father who had been killed in Vietnam by friendly fire and a skepticism about American foreign policy that made him excellent at his job and terrible at parties.

Miles and Rick met on their first day at a base in Kuwait, in a room that was too hot and smelled too much of air conditioning and not enough of anything real.

"You're the muscle," Miles said. He was sitting on a plastic chair, reading a book. He did not look up when Rick walked in.

"I'm the guy who follows orders," Rick said.

Miles looked up. He had the kind of face that belonged on a college campus: intelligent, slightly cynical, perpetually unimpressed. "Same thing, usually."

Their first mission was supposed to be straightforward: infiltrate a village outside Ramadi, locate a weapons cache, extract. The intelligence said the cache was real, the village was real, and the people inside were armed combatants.

It was all a lie.

They arrived at the village at 0200 hours. Rick led the way, his rifle shouldered, his boots making no sound on the sand. The village was small—twelve or thirteen buildings, a well in the center, a dog barking somewhere. No guards. No patrols. No weapons.

When they entered the first building, they found children. A lot of children. Maybe forty of them, sleeping on mats on the floor of a building that was clearly a school.

Rick stood in the doorway and looked at the children and then at the intelligence packet in his hands and then at Miles, who was standing behind him with a look on his face that said: I told you so, but not in words.

They left without saying a word. They walked back to the base in silence. Rick felt something shift inside him, like a gear grinding against another gear that it was not meant to grind against.

Their second mission was worse. They were sent to intercept a courier carrying "critical intelligence" about an upcoming attack. The intelligence said the courier was armed and dangerous, traveling alone on a dirt road outside Fallujah.

They found the courier on the dirt road. He was a man on a motorcycle, and he was carrying—Rick squinted at the package the man was holding on his lap—a receipt from a supermarket.

Miles took the receipt. He read it. He read it again.

"Olive oil, bread, milk, eggs, cigarettes," Miles said. "That's the critical intelligence."

Rick stared at him. "You're joking."

"No," Miles said. "I'm not joking. This is what we were sent to intercept. Four Green Berets, two Humvees, an intelligence assessment that said this man was carrying plans for a bomb attack. And he was carrying a receipt for olive oil."

They let the man go. Rick watched him ride away on his motorcycle, the supermarket receipt flapping in his hands like a flag of surrender.

"I don't get it," Rick said.

"Get what?"

"Why we were sent to stop him. Why anyone thought this man was a threat."

Miles laughed. It was not a happy laugh. It was the laugh of a man who has been laughing for a long time and is running out of things to laugh at. "You don't get it because you're not supposed to get it. That's the point. If you got it, the machine wouldn't work. The machine needs men like you to follow orders and men like me to write reports that nobody reads, and between us, we make it look like there's a plan. But there isn't a plan. There's just accidents. Unlikely, stupid, inevitable accidents."

Rick thought about this for a long time. They were sitting on the hood of a Humvee, watching the sun come up over the desert. The sky was orange and pink and beautiful, the way desert skies are beautiful when nothing else is happening.

"I don't care about the plan," Rick said finally. "I care about the men beside me. That's all I've ever cared about. The steel mill, the Army, this—none of it matters as much as the man standing next to you when the bullets start flying. That's the only truth I know."

Miles looked at him. For a moment, the cynicism dropped from his face like a mask, and Rick saw something underneath: a man who was tired, a man who was lost, a man who was searching for something he could not name.

"You're a remarkable man, Rick Donovan," Miles said. "Do you know that?"

"I'm a steelworker," Rick said. "I lift heavy things. That's all."

"That's everything," Miles said. "That's the whole damn truth. You lift heavy things, and you don't complain, and you don't ask why, and you keep lifting. That's what keeps the world from falling apart. Not the plans. Not the intelligence. Not the generals in their air-conditioned rooms. Men like you. Men who lift."

Their third mission was the one that almost killed them. It was supposed to be a patrol—routine reconnaissance along a river outside Tikrit. Intelligence said there were "suspected insurgents" in the area.

There were no insurgents. There were farmers. Six farmers, working their fields at dawn, with rifles they used to shoot at birds.

But someone in the chain of command had made a mistake. A radio error. A misinterpreted message. And before Rick and Miles and the rest of the squad knew what was happening, someone had fired a shot.

The farmers fired back. Rick's squad fired back. And in the space of four minutes, two farmers were dead, one was wounded, and Rick and three other soldiers were on the ground with bullets grazing their boots and their hearts hammering like birds trying to escape a cage.

Afterwards, Rick sat in the sand and stared at his hands. They were shaking. Not from fear—from rage. Rage at the farmers, who had been trying to grow wheat while men like him came and killed them for no reason. Rage at the soldiers, who had followed orders they didn't understand. Rage at himself, for being the kind of man who followed orders without asking why.

Miles sat beside him. He did not say anything. He just sat there, in the sand, in the heat, in the silence that follows gunfire and always means the same thing.

"I'm going home," Rick said.

"When?"

"After this tour. I'm done. I came here to be a hero. I came here because the Army promised me a future. But the future is just accidents. Unlikely, stupid, inevitable accidents. I don't want to be part of that anymore."

Miles nodded. "I'm going back to Yale. I'm going to teach. I'm going to sit in a classroom and talk to young men and women about the difference between policy and morality, and I'll tell them that the world is not what the generals say it is, and that the truth is usually much stupider than the lies."

They sat in the sand for a long time. The sun rose higher. The farmers went back to their fields. The dead were buried. The reports were written. And Rick Donovan, six-foot-four steelworker from Youngstown, Ohio, made a decision that would define the rest of his life: he was going home, and he was going back to the steel mill, and he was going to buy his pickup truck, and he was going to live the small, unremarkable, honest life of a man who knows that the world is made of accidents and decides to lift heavy things anyway.

He bought the truck. He went back to the mill. He married a woman named Diane who worked at the grocery store and laughed at his jokes even when they weren't funny. He had two kids. They moved to a house in a town called Niles, and Rick spent his weekends fixing things—fences, roofs, the occasional truck that belonged to a neighbor who couldn't afford a mechanic.

He never talked about the war. Not because he was ashamed. Because the war was too stupid to talk about. It was just accidents. Unlikely, stupid, inevitable accidents.

But sometimes, on quiet evenings, when the sun was setting and the mill was quiet and the air smelled like burning and beer, Rick would sit on his porch and look at the sky and think about Miles, who was teaching at Yale, and the farmers in Tikrit, and the receipt for olive oil, and he would feel something that was not regret and not peace but something in between: the feeling of a man who has lifted heavy things his whole life and knows, with absolute certainty, that the weight was never his to carry.

He bought another beer. He sat on his porch. He watched the sun go down.

That was enough.
