The elevator in the DUMBO building on Washington Street had three buttons: one for the lobby, one for the basement parking, and one for the sixth floor where Maya Tran's apartment was. Maya lived there with her seven-year-old son, Leo, and she had moved in six weeks ago because the rent was reasonable and the subway was five minutes away. It was a compromise apartment—newly renovated but not new, quiet but not isolated, the kind of place that existed in the spaces between Brooklyn's luxury and its grit.

The person who occupied the floor below hers had not been in the building's original records. Maya discovered this on her third week, when a package arrived addressed to "M. Galloway, 5B"—but the unit directory in the lobby listed only one tenant on the fifth floor, and that person's name was "M. Goldstein, 5A."

She mentioned it to the super, a large Dominican man named Hector who had been maintaining the building for thirty years and had opinions about everything.

"Fifth floor?" Hector said, not looking up from his phone. "Only Goldstein lives there. Old guy. Retired or something. Don't worry about it."

But Maya did worry, because five weeks later, a second delivery arrived—this one a large box of artisanal cheese—with the same address: 5B. The box sat at M. Goldstein's door for two days before someone—Maya never saw who—took it inside.

Maya Tran was a community lawyer. She had spent eight years fighting eviction cases, police misconduct, the kind of work that trained you to notice patterns and follow them to their logical conclusion. She noticed the deliveries. She noticed that at odd hours—1 AM, 3 AM, sometimes at noon on Tuesdays—she would hear the soft click of a door opening and closing on the floor below. No footsteps followed. No voices. Just the door, opening and closing like a breath.

She told her neighbour on the left, a woman named Rosa who worked the night shift at a hospital and had seen everything Brooklyn had to offer and developed the particular stoicism that came with it.

"Maybe it's a storage unit," Rosa said, sipping her coffee on the shared fire escape. "Maybe someone has a second key. Look, Maria—my name is Maria, not Rosa, I told you this already—if you don't like the noise, you can complain. But if you're looking for mysteries in a building with a working elevator, you're looking in the wrong place."

Maya did not dismiss the concern just because Rosa dismissed it. She started a notebook, the way she did for every case. Dates and times of the deliveries. The sounds from below—click, silence, click. She documented one incident where she found a folded piece of paper at the bottom of her stairwell, written in careful cursive: "Your son is very bright. He should consider piano."

Leo had mentioned piano to his third-grade teacher, not to anyone in the building. The note made Maya's hands shake in a way she did not expect.

She went to the building manager, a corporation called Sterling Properties based in Manhattan. The manager, a young woman named Priya, looked at Maya's notebook with professional interest but no particular alarm.

"There is no 5B," Priya said. "The fifth floor has three units—5A, 5B is a clerical error. Whoever is living down there is either subletting illegally or—" she paused, choosing her words carefully "—there's a misunderstanding about the layout."

"What should I do?" Maya asked. This was the question she asked most often in her profession. The answer was usually complicated.

Priya recommended she document everything and come back if the behaviour escalated. "If they're not paying rent, that's a property issue, not a safety issue," she said. "I'll add a note to the file."

Maya did what lawyers do when the system offers only notes: she investigated herself. She began leaving her apartment at unusual hours, watching the building's entrance, waiting. On a Saturday at 11 PM, she saw it—a figure slipping out of the stairwell door that led to the fifth floor. The figure was slender, older, dressed in dark clothes, carrying nothing. The person paused in the hallway light and Maya saw a face: gaunt, with thinning grey hair and glasses that caught the fluorescent glow. The person looked directly at Maya's door, held the gaze for a moment that felt longer than it should have, and disappeared around the corner.

Maya did not confront her. She went home, locked her door, and sat in her kitchen with Leo asleep in the next room, and she thought about what she had seen and what she needed to do.

The next morning, she filed a formal complaint with Sterling Properties, attached her notebook, and requested in writing that the occupancy of the fifth floor be investigated. She copied the city's housing authority and, because she knew how these things worked, kept a copy for her own records.

Two days later, M. Galloway knocked on her door.

Maya opened it with her body positioned between the door and Leo's bedroom. The person on the other side was exactly what she had seen in the hallway—older, thin, dressed carefully but not expensively, with the air of someone who had once been important and had not yet accepted that they were no longer.

"Ms. Tran," the person said. The voice was quiet, precise, with a hint of an accent Maya could not place. "I understand you've been concerned about the fifth floor. I wanted to speak to you directly before this becomes something larger."

"Who are you?" Maya asked.

"Michael Galloway. I retired from the psychology program at NYU eighteen years ago. I live in the fifth floor."

"That's not one of the registered units."

"I'm aware." His expression did not change. "The previous tenant—the Goldsteins—left without proper notice. Their lease was transferred to me informally. It's a property matter, not a legal one."

"You're sending notes to my son."

A flicker of something—guilt? defensiveness?—crossed his face. "Leo is a remarkable child. I've heard him playing in the hallway. He has a natural sensitivity to rhythm. The note was an observation, nothing more."

"It felt like surveillance."

His jaw tightened. "I observe things. It's what I've done for forty years. I did not invade your privacy. I did not threaten you. I did not harm your son." He paused. "What I did was write a letter to the building manager suggesting that the family above me might benefit from a professional psychological evaluation. Not because I think there's anything wrong with you. But because I have seen patterns before, and I wanted to be responsible."

"What patterns?"

His silence was the answer. Maya understood then that she was not dealing with a predator in the conventional sense. She was dealing with something more complicated: a man whose entire life had been built on reading people, on finding the hidden structures in human behaviour, and who had somehow confused his professional instincts with a right to act on them.

She did not call the police. She called a different lawyer—a colleague named David who specialised in housing law—and they filed a joint complaint with the city that resulted in Galloway being required to register as an unauthorized occupant, pay a fine, and submit to a building inspection. Galloway did not resist. He accepted the consequences with the quiet resignation of a man who understood rules and knew he had not been following them.

Before he left the building three weeks later, he left one final note on Maya's door, not folded this time but taped flat so she would see it immediately: "I am sorry that my attention became a burden. I thought it was a gift."

Maya read the note and felt nothing except the hollow satisfaction of a case won without being solved. She had protected her son and herself. She had followed the rules. But the feeling of safety she had expected did not arrive, because safety was not something that could be achieved by filing complaints and winning legal arguments. Safety was something else entirely, and she was still learning what that was.

Leo asked her, months later, when they had moved to a different neighbourhood with better schools and a park across the street, if M. Galloway was a bad person.

Maya thought about this for a long time. "He was a man who didn't know how to stop looking," she said finally. "And sometimes that's worse than being bad."
