The Devil Quartermaster
The Mississippi does not hurry. It moves with the patience of something that has been flowing for a long time and has no reason to believe it will ever stop. I learned this when I was a young man, standing on the bank below Oakhaven, watching the water pass by like a dark ribbon of time, and I thought: that river knows something about this town that we do not.
My name is Silas Thorne. I was born in Oakhaven in 1819, the second son of Cora Thorne, who owned three coal mines and a freight company that ran along the Mississippi from Memphis to New Orleans. My father was a hard man, and he was not cruel -- those are different things. Cruelty requires intention. My father was simply hard, like coal, like the earth that produced it, like the river that carried it. He did not intend to be harsh. He simply was.
I served in the Army as a quartermaster in the European theater. I came home in 1945 with a discharge paper, a uniform that did not fit anymore, and the memory of what I had seen in the supply depots of Germany -- mountains of food being shipped to armies while villages starved, trucks loaded with medicine while children died at the roadside. I swore I would never touch a supply line again.
But Oakhaven needed me. My father was dying. The family business was drowning in debt. And beneath it all was a second business, one I discovered gradually, like finding rot in the walls of a house you have lived in your entire life and assumed was sound.
The Thorne freight company had been quietly transporting "agricultural equipment" from a warehouse in Memphis to a series of rural depots along the Mississippi. The equipment was not agricultural. It was weapons -- surplus from the war, redistributed through a network of local gangs, mine guards, and private security firms. The paperwork was immaculate. The trucks were registered. The drivers were honest men who knew nothing more than the contents of the last crate and the destination of the next.
Wade was innocent of this. Wade was my younger brother, twenty-six, with hands that were better suited to holding a pen than a wrench. He had always wanted to be a poet. He wrote poems on the backs of shipping manifests and hid them in the drawers of his desk at the general store, where Miss Lula Mae, who ran the town's only boarding house and knew everything about everybody, found them and sometimes read them aloud in the evenings to her boarders, who listened with expressions that ranged from polite confusion to genuine appreciation.
I decided to protect Wade. I took over the supply operation alone, telling him it was just regular freight -- coal, grain, fertilizer. Nothing more. Nothing less. I drove the trucks myself for the first month, and then I hired drivers, and I told myself that distance would make me innocent. Distance does not make you innocent. It makes you complicit in a different way.
Eulalie lived two blocks from the boarding house. She was a woman who washed clothes for the mine owners, and in the quiet evenings, she stood at the edge of the Mississippi River and sang songs her grandmother had taught her. Her voice was low and steady and carried a sadness that I could not name but that I recognized, because I carried the same sadness inside me, folded up small and hidden away where nobody could see it.
We fell in love quietly. Without fanfare. In the space between words. She set a cup of coffee on my table at the boarding house and left it there because she knew I took it black and hot. I watched her from the porch of her house while the Mississippi rolled past like a dark river of time. I did not know how to say what I felt. She did not need me to say it. She knew.
The thunderstorm came in June, the kind that comes suddenly and with the force of something that has been building for a long time and is finally, mercifully, done. The sky turned black at three in the afternoon. The wind picked up. The first drop of rain hit the warehouse roof like a stone.
Wade came to the warehouse that evening. He had not been there in months. He came with a face that I did not recognize -- older, harder, as if he had spent the last few months growing up without knowing it was happening.
"There are crates of rifles in here," he said. It was not a question.
"Yes."
"How many?"
"I do not know. The manifests say two hundred. The manifests are always wrong."
He looked at the crates. They were lined up like coffins, long and wooden and painted with numbers that meant nothing to anyone except the men who painted them and the men who signed for them.
"How long do you think it will be before one of these ends up in someone's hands who shouldn't have it?"
I could not answer.
"I think about that every night," he said. "I can't. So I am going to do something about it."
He stole a truck that belonged to the freight company. I do not know whether he asked the drivers or simply took the keys from the hook in the garage. He loaded the truck with weapons -- I do not know how many, perhaps thirty, perhaps forty -- and he drove it to the Mississippi River, where the old wooden bridge crossed over the dark water.
He told me what he was going to do later, over dinner at the boarding house. He was calm. He was not angry. He was the way I imagine a man is before he decides to die -- not afraid, not sad, just very clear about what needs to be done.
"I am going to push them into the river," he said. "The rifles. All of them. The river will take them. Nobody will know."
"Wade," I said. "The bridge is rusted."
"I know."
"The truck is old."
"I know."
"Then you will not make it across."
He looked at me for a long moment. He smiled -- the faintest trace of a smile, the same smile he had had when we were boys, sitting on the porch of the house we grew up in, watching the sun go down over the coal dust and the river.
"I know," he said again.
He went to the river in the middle of the night. The storm was still raging. The rain came down in sheets. The river was high and black and furious, rising and falling like the breathing of something vast and angry and indifferent.
Wade pushed the truck off the bridge. It fell into the water. It did not splash -- it disappeared, silently, like a stone dropped into deep water. The truck sank. The weapons sank. Wade did not make it across the bridge. The bridge was old. The truck was heavy. Wade was not a strong swimmer.
I found out the next morning. Miss Lula Mae told me. She had seen the truck leave. She had heard the bridge creak. She had not tried to stop him -- she told me later that she knew she could not. She had stood on the porch and watched him go, and she had sung one of Eulalie's songs under her breath, because songs are the only things that make sense when words do not.
I told Eulalie that afternoon. We were standing at the edge of the river, the same place where she sang in the evenings. The rain had stopped. The sky was gray. The water was calm, except for the places where the surface was still disturbed by things that had recently sunk beneath it.
She held my hand. She did not say anything for a long time. Then she said: "Your brother was the only good man in this town. And the town killed him for it."
I took the remaining weapons -- all that were left in the warehouse, perhaps a hundred rifles, crates stacked three high, the metal still cold despite the summer heat -- and I drove them to the river myself. It was another storm, or a similar storm. It was always a storm in Oakhaven when something important happened.
I pushed the crates into the water one by one. I was crying. I had never cried before. I had been a quartermaster for twenty years. I had loaded trucks and signed manifests and balanced supply sheets and told myself that I was not responsible for what happened to the things I moved. But now I was standing at the edge of the river with crates of rifles in my hands, and I was crying, and I understood that I had been responsible for everything, all along.
The river took the crates. It took them easily, without ceremony, the way it takes everything -- leaves, branches, dead animals, the bones of men who drowned in wars that the men who fought them could not remember.
But as I pushed the last crate into the water, the river rose. It rose faster than it should. The storm was unnatural, or maybe Oakhaven's sins had finally made the sky angry. The water surged. It grabbed me. It pulled me under.
The river was cold and dark and full of things that had been buried in it for a long time. I felt them around me -- not as spirits or ghosts or anything supernatural, just as things. Debris. Wood. Rust. The remains of trucks and crates and the bones of horses and men. It was all there, everything that had ever been thrown into the river, all accumulated, all waiting, patient as water.
Eulalie stood on the bank and watched. She did not scream. She did not run for help. She sang one of her grandmother's songs. Her voice was low and steady, and it carried across the water to where I was going down, and it was the last thing I heard before the river took me and the darkness took me and the weight of everything the river had ever carried took me with it.
Miss Lula Mae told the story. Sheriff Boyd covered it up as a tragic accident. The mine owners hired a new freight company. The weapons kept flowing, just through a different route. Oakhaven did not change. It never changes.
Eulalie continued singing at the river's edge. Nobody listened very carefully. But she sang. She sang every evening, when the sun went down and the river turned gold and the town went quiet and the only sound was her voice and the water moving past, slow and patient, carrying everything away.
