The Jade Abyss

Dr. Lin Xian had mapped every ley line on the continent, but the one that ran beneath the Shanghai Spire was different. It didn't flow. It pulsed.

She stood in the observation deck of the Spire's third sub-basement, watching the jade-colored energy thread through the seismic monitors. The reading was impossible: the ley line was growing. Not flowing from one place to another, but expanding, consuming the rock around it, converting matter into... something else.

"Lin, you need to see this," came Kaito's voice over the comm. "The core samples from level five. They're not rock anymore. They're—I don't know what they are. Crystalline. But they're warm. They're beating."

Lin ran. The elevator was too slow, so she took the stairwell, three steps at a time, her lab coat flapping behind her like broken wings. Level five was supposed to be solid granite, the foundation of the Spire. But when she burst through the doors, she found Kaito standing in front of a wall that was no longer stone.

The wall was jade. Translucent, glowing jade that breathed.

"It started three hours ago," Kaito said, his voice tight. "A local earthquake, maybe? But the seismic data doesn't match. This isn't tectonic. It's—Lin, I think the ley line is cultivating the mountain."

The word stopped Lin cold. Cultivating. In the old texts, before the Integration, cultivators drew qi from the earth to strengthen their own bodies. But this was the reverse. The earth was drawing from... what?

Lin approached the jade wall. She could feel it—a pulling sensation in her chest, like something was trying to unspool her DNA. She touched the surface.

The jade was warm. And it whispered.

Not in words, but in a language that preceded language. A language of topology and heat and the deep mathematics of growth. Lin understood, suddenly and with terrifying clarity: the ley lines weren't energy channels. They were roots. The earth was a cultivator, and humanity had been living in its dantian for four billion years.

"We have to seal it," Lin said. "If it reaches the surface—"

"Too late," Kaito said. He pointed upward. Through the ceiling of level five, a thread of jade light was already piercing the rock, rising toward the surface like a needle through silk.

Lin drew her cultivation datapad. If she couldn't stop the ley line, maybe she could redirect it. She began to calculate the meridian bypass, her fingers moving so fast they blurred. Behind her, the jade wall began to crack.
