The Creature in Room 4B

Linda Morales found it on the windowsill of Room 4B. It was a small mechanical creature with one hind leg made of precision gears. The gears turned slowly, methodically, like a heartbeat made of metal. Linda picked it up. It was warm.

She didn't know where it came from. Maybe it had always been there. Maybe it had been there since she arrived at the Queens psychiatric hospital three years ago, since the breakdown, since the doctor said she had obsessive hallucinations and needed medication and rest.

She placed it on the windowsill. It didn't eat. It didn't drink. It just sat there, gears turning, while Linda sat on the edge of her bed and watched it.

The doctor—Dr. Whitman—said it was a manifestation of her condition. "Linda," he said, sitting across from her in his office with its beige walls and its framed prints of landscapes, "you're projecting. You're creating patterns where there are none." But Linda knew. She had seen it on the bridge three years ago, standing on the皇后区大桥, watching the East River, watching something climb along the railing, something with metal gears for hind legs. She had reached out. She had almost caught it. Then she had fallen. Or someone had pushed her. Or she had jumped. The doctor said she had jumped. Linda wasn't sure anymore.

She started recording the gear rotations. One rotation every 4.0 seconds. Sometimes faster when the hallway lights flickered. Sometimes slower when the hospital was quiet. She couldn't determine a pattern. She kept recording anyway.

Dr. Whitman visited every morning. He asked her how she slept. He asked her how she felt. He asked her if she was still seeing things. Linda said no. She wasn't sure. She wasn't sure about anything anymore.

On a night in March, the hallway lights flickered. Linda was in bed, trying to sleep, when she felt a vibration through the floorboards. It was a low hum, like a machine running at idle. She got up and went to the window. Through the window, she saw a silver car parked outside the hospital. It was smooth and metallic and reflected the streetlights like oil on water.

Two figures got out. They wore white coats. They looked like nurses. They looked like something else. They walked to the hospital entrance and disappeared inside.

Linda ran. She ran down the corridor, past the other patients' rooms, past the nurses' station where a young nurse was writing in a chart. Linda didn't stop. She ran to Room 4B.

The two figures in white were lifting the mechanical creature from the windowsill. One of them turned. Linda saw eyes that were calm and knowing and utterly alien. The figure said something. Linda couldn't hear what it was.

Linda ran to the end of the corridor. She grabbed a glass cup from a tray and threw it against the wall. It shattered. A shard cut her palm. Blood welled up, dark and thick, and fell onto the linoleum floor. Where the blood touched the floor, the linoleum blackened and smoked. A narrow沟痕 appeared, a焦黑的 line burning itself into the floor.

The figures disappeared. Room 4B was empty. The windowsill was bare.

Dr. Whitman came to Room 4B the next morning. He looked at Linda's bandaged hand. He looked at the empty windowsill. He looked at Linda. "Linda," he said, "you're having another episode."

But Linda knew. She had seen it. She had seen everything. She just couldn't prove it. And maybe that was the point.

She sat on the edge of her bed. She looked at the empty windowsill. She listened to the gears that were no longer there.
