He took a job as a bellhop at the St. Regis because the superintendent said a man in a uniform who stood still looked respectable, and respectable was enough to get you through a door. Thomas didn't need doors. He needed sleep.

The first time he found himself standing at Ravenswood Cemetery on 125th Street at two in the morning, he blamed it on the new pair of shoes. They pinched his left heel into a blister that throbbed in time with his heartbeat, and walking seemed like the only cure for a pain that refused to stay in one place.

The woman under the simple stone marked "Beloved Mother" was Marta Kowalski, who had worked in a garment factory until her lungs gave out at thirty-one.

By the fourth week, Thomas had compiled a list of two hundred and fourteen names. He read them aloud at night, one by one, in a voice that grew steadier with each name, as if speaking them kept them alive in some small, stubborn way.

ACT III

The turning point came on a Thursday in May. A woman in a fur coat—real fur, expensive, the kind that cost more than Thomas made in three months—approached him while he was kneeling beside a headstone.

"You're the hotel man," she said.

"Bellhop, madam."

"Same thing. What are you doing here?"

He stood, brushed dirt from his uniform trousers, and held up his notebook. "Research," he said, and then, because he suddenly felt foolish, added: "I'm documenting the graves. These people—they don't have anyone."

She studied him the way one studies a street performer who has just done something unexpectedly well. "My family owns the land," she said. "Harlow & Sons Development. We're planning to build here. A luxury building. Two hundred units. Rooftop garden."

The world stopped for three seconds. "When?"

"Groundbreaking in September. The cemetery will be relocated. We have permits."

"Relocated to where?"

"Sleep, Mr. Harlow. That's what everyone in this city needs."

He waited until her footsteps faded, then knelt again and opened his notebook to the last page. He wrote one more name: Eleanor Harlow, if that was her name, a woman who owned the earth and wanted to build on top of the dead who had lived on it first.

Thomas did not sleep that night. He walked to the Public Library and stayed until closing. He read every page of the city's land records, every permit application, every correspondence between Harlow & Sons and the Department of Cemeteries. He found a loophole: the relocation permit required thirty days' notice to any "next of kin or interested parties," and there were exactly zero next of kin on file for two hundred and fourteen bodies.

The thirty days had not elapsed. The permits were fraudulent.

ACT IV

Thomas filed an injunction on the twenty-third day. He did it himself, at the courthouse on Centre Street, using language he had learned from law books in the library and a template he had copied by hand. The judge, a tired man with a stack of cases taller than his forehead, granted a sixty-day stay.

Sixty days. Two hundred and fourteen names that would not be moved. A rooftop garden that would have to wait.

On the last night of the stay, Thomas returned to Ravenswood one final time. He placed the brass tray ring—the first thing he had ever left—on the headstone of Seamus O'Brien. Then he took out his notebook, closed it, and held it against his chest for a moment, as if it were a person.

He would not be sleeping for a long time yet. But for the first time in four years, he did not need to walk to forget. He had something to remember instead.
