The Entropy King

The colony of Aegis was a cluster of pressurized domes on a frozen rock at the edge of the observable universe. Outside, the temperature was absolute zero; inside, the air was recycled and tasted of ozone and desperation. Kaelen was the colony's chief engineer, the only man who could keep the life-support systems from failing.

Kaelen also remembered being the Sovereign of the Void, the ruler of a trillion galaxies.

He spent his days "fixing" the colony. He used his memories of the higher dimensions to optimize the power grids and stabilize the oxygen scrubbers. To the colonists, he was a miracle worker, a savior who kept them alive in a dead universe.

The tension rose as Kaelen began to notice a terrifying pattern. Every time he "fixed" a machine or "saved" a dying patient, the external temperature of the planet dropped another fraction of a degree. He realized that the "laws" he remembered were not laws of creation, but laws of entropy.

He wasn't bringing order to the colony; he was stealing energy from the rest of the universe to maintain a tiny, artificial bubble of life. He was an entropy vampire.

The climax occurred when the main reactor of Aegis suffered a catastrophic breach. The colony was minutes away from freezing. Kaelen had the knowledge to fix it, but he now understood the cost: to save the ten thousand people in the domes, he would have to trigger a "Void Collapse," effectively extinguishing the last few remaining stars in the local cluster.

He looked at the faces of the children in the corridors, the terrified eyes of the colonists. Then he looked at the void outside, where the last lights of the universe were flickering out.

Kaelen didn't fix the reactor.

He stood in the center of the control room and watched as the power failed. He didn't fight the cold; he embraced it. He used his remaining power to ensure that the end was painless—a sudden, gentle sleep for everyone in the colony.

The aftermath was a perfect, absolute silence.

Kaelen was the last one left. He sat in the dark, the frost creeping up his legs, the air turning to ice in his lungs. He felt the universe finally reach its equilibrium. There were no more stars, no more heat, no more noise.

He was finally the Sovereign again. He ruled over the only thing that was truly eternal: the Void.

As the last spark of his consciousness vanished, Kaelen felt a strange, cold peace. He had not saved his people, but he had saved the universe from the cruelty of a prolonged death. He had become the King of Entropy, and his kingdom was a perfect, shimmering, absolute zero.
