The light filtered through the observatory dome like blood through water, the way dread always did in the small hours. Clara stood alone among the instruments, watching the shadows pool in the corners, and knew this was how it always ended-with horror where there had been wonder, with despair where there had been hope.

The cold had been deepening for weeks, turning the corridors into veins of ice. But beneath the frozen surface, something was waking.

The stranger had told them once: "Some doors should stay closed." At the time, it had seemed like superstition, the kind of thing you said when you feared the unknown. Now, standing in the darkness, Clara understood. The truth was always more terrible than the mystery that surrounded it.

But beneath the stillness, terror was growing.

The night of the discovery, everything changed. Clara found the specimen in the basement, hidden beneath the research notes, preserved in glass that had once been clear. The evidence was not what they had expected. It was worse. Or perhaps-and this was the cruelest part-it was exactly what they had always feared.

And then, in a sudden revelation, everything they had believed shattered.

"What do you want?" Clara demanded of the presence, her voice steady despite the terror that threatened to tear her apart.

The answer came not in words but in the silence, a demonstration of horror that left no room for doubt. This was the choice: face the truth, or be destroyed by the fear.

In the end, Clara faced the truth. The consequence was painful, but it was real. And in the reality was something like acceptance of the inevitable.

The dome let in the pale light of dawn, and for the first time in months, Clara could see clearly-the horror that had always been there, waiting.
