The evening light came through the window like a warning, the way truth always did in autumn. Eleanor stood at the threshold, watching the silence unfold across the valley, and wondered if this was how it always ended-with silence where there had been sound, with grief where there had been hope.

The rain had been falling for three days, turning the paths into rivers of shadow. But beneath the surface calm, secrets were brewing.

The grandmother had told them once: "The past is not dead, it is waiting." At the time, it had seemed like poetry, the kind of thing you said when you didn't know what else to say. Now, standing in the mist, Eleanor understood. The truth was always simpler than the mystery that surrounded it.

But beneath the quiet exterior, old wounds were emerging.

The night of the storm, everything changed. Eleanor found the letter in the attic, hidden beneath the old clock, wrapped in cloth that had once been white. The message was not what they had expected. It was worse. Or perhaps-and this was the cruelest part-it was exactly what they had always feared.

And then, in a single moment, everything they had believed became questionable.

"What do you want?" Eleanor asked the shadow, their voice steady despite the fear that threatened to tear them apart.

The answer came not in words but in the light, a demonstration of truth that left no room for doubt. This was the choice: accept the truth, or be destroyed by the illusion.

In the end, Eleanor chose the harder path. The consequence was bittersweet, but it was honest. And in the honesty was something like peace.

The window let in the morning light, and for the first time in years, Eleanor could see clearly.

The fog did not arrive so much as it had always been there, and only now had Ez noticed it. That was the way of fog in London: it had never been absent, and only when you stopped looking did you see that it had swallowed the world.
