Tommy clapped too. But he clapped for Lily, not Jack. He clapped for the sister who'd reached through a wall of wood and plaster and metal and put something real where he'd tried to put something fake.

After the show, he walked home alone through the streets of Harlem. The buildings leaned toward each other like old friends. The streetlights flickered. Somewhere, a saxophone was still playing.

He got to his apartment and opened the drawer under his desk. The box was gone. He sat on the bed and stared at the empty space where it had been.

He wasn't angry. He was something he hadn't felt in a long time: humbled.

Across the street, in the East End, Jack sat on the edge of his mattress and counted the tips from the night's performance. There wasn't enough for the operation. Not even close. But there was enough for next week. And the week after that. And maybe, eventually, enough for everything.

He looked out the window at the street below. Two rows of duplexes. Broken streetlights. Weeds pushing through concrete. But tonight, the streetlights seemed a little less broken. The weeds seemed a little less concrete.

He smiled. Just a little.
