The land around Greenacres did not want to be farmed. Anyone who tried to grow anything in it learned this quickly, usually in the first season, when the cotton turned brown at the edges despite adequate rain, or the corn grew tall and thin and toppled in the slightest breeze. The soil was dark, almost black, and rich-smelling after rain, and newcomers to the delta always remarked on its fertility. They were wrong. The soil was not fertile. It was hungry.

Elias Thorne knew this before he arrived. He had grown up in Memphis, three hours south, in a house that belonged to a woman who was his father's sister and who had never invited him to visit. His father was Silas Thorne, owner of Greenacres Plantation, and Elias had known him exactly once, at age six, when Silas had come to Memphis for a medical appointment and had taken the boy for ice cream and asked him, in a voice that was both tender and distant, whether he preferred chocolate or vanilla.

Elias had said chocolate. Silas had smiled and said, "Good choice. Chocolate is honest. It doesn't pretend to be anything it's not."

He paid for the ice cream and left. Elias did not see him again.

When Silas died, five years later, Miss Lavinia—Elias's aunt, Silas's sister—sent him a letter. It was written in a precise, spidery hand on thick cream paper. It informed Elias that Greenacres needed a Thorne. That he was the last one. That he should come and take possession of the estate.

Elias was twenty-six years old and working as a clerk in a Memphis law office. He made twelve dollars a week and lived in a rooming house that smelled of boiled cabbage and other people's cooking. He had no particular attachment to the law office. He had no particular attachment to anything, except for a feeling he could not name: a pull, faint but persistent, toward the land he had never seen.

He went.

Greenacres was larger than he had imagined and smaller at the same time. The plantation covered two thousand acres of Mississippi delta, but half of it was overgrown with kudzu and briar. The cotton fields had not been planted in five years. The house, a large antebellum structure with columns that had once been white and were now the color of old teeth, sagged in places. Vines covered the north wall. The roof leaked in at least six places.

But the land—Elias noticed the land immediately. It was dark and deep and when he stood in the cotton field and put his hand in the soil, he felt something that was not temperature or texture. It was a sensation, faint as a heartbeat, as though the ground beneath him were alive.

He dismissed it as imagination. He had been away from this place for twenty-six years. Of course he felt strange.

Miss Lavinia met him at the house. She was seventy years old, thin as a rail, with sharp eyes and a posture that suggested she had spent her entire life refusing to bend. She wore black, as though in perpetual mourning, though Elias did not know for whom.

"You're taller than your father," she said, taking his hand in both of hers. Her grip was surprisingly strong.

"Thank you, Miss Lavinia."

"Don't thank me. I didn't ask for you."

She led him inside. The house was cold and smelled of wax and old wood. Martha, the housekeeper, was a large woman with a kind face and nervous hands. "I know."

"That's what I've heard."

Miss Lavinia set down her fork. "Do you believe it?"

"Believe what?"

"That your father had a gift."

Elias thought about the sensation he had felt in the cotton field. The faint pulse beneath the soil. "I'm not sure what I believe."

Miss Lavinia studied him for a long moment. Then she smiled, and it was not a kind smile. "You'll learn."

The first week, Elias explored the property. He walked the boundaries, which were marked by stone walls that had been built, he estimated, in the 1840s. He visited the cotton gin, which was rusted and nonfunctional. He walked through the slave quarters, which had been converted into worker housing and were now occupied by a man named Willie Jenkins and his family. Willie was a quiet man, fifty years old, who spoke to Elias with a polite distance that suggested he had not yet decided whether to trust him.

"The land's been quiet," Willie said, when Elias asked how things were.

"Quiet?"

"Yeah. The land's been quiet. Nothing much growing. Not like it used to."

Elias thought of the dark soil and the faint pulse. "It looks rich to me."

Willie's expression did not change. "Looks rich. Ain't the same thing."

On the fifth day, Elias found the journal in his father's study. It was on the desk, in a drawer that had not been locked. He opened it and began to read. The entries were dated from 1918 to 1923, the last five years of Silas Thorne's life.

*April 14, 1919: The yield is extraordinary. Four bales per acre, which is impossible. I have spoken to Dr. Armitage, and he has no explanation. The soil tests show nothing unusual. The rain has been adequate but not excessive. I am the only planter in the county achieving these numbers. There is something about this land that I do not understand.*

*September 3, 1920: Martha's boy fell ill. Fever, the doctor says. I have given him the best medicine. He is not improving. I find myself thinking of the land. It demanded something last season. I gave it the old mule. It was enough for one more planting, but not for two. I need to understand what it requires.*

*January 17, 1921: I have spoken to Miss Lavinia. She does not wish to discuss it. She says the arrangements have been sufficient. But they are not sufficient. The land is growing hungrier.*

Elias hung up the phone and walked to the edge of the property, to the circle of dark grass. He knelt and put his hand in the soil. The pulse was stronger here. More definite. A heartbeat, slow and deep, like the heartbeat of something very large and very old.

He stood up and walked to the house. In the basement, behind a wall of stacked firewood that Martha said had been there for as long as she could remember, he found a door. It was made of heavy oak and bound with iron. It was locked, but the lock was old and the wood around it was rotting, and it took Elias only ten minutes to break it open with a crowbar he found in the kitchen.

Behind the door was a staircase that went down. Elias descended with a lantern. The stairs ended in a room that was not a basement. It was a chamber, roughly square, with walls of exposed earth that had been smoothed and packed. And on the walls, carved into the earth with a knife or a knife-like implement, were names.

Dozens of them. Hundreds. Each name was accompanied by a date. Elias ran his fingers over the carvings and felt the ridges of the letters. The earliest date was 1769. The most recent was 1923. His father's year of death.

He found the Thorne family entries. Silas Thorne, 1923. Jeremiah Thorne, 1891. Catherine Thorne, 1855. Abigail Thorne, 1820. Margaret Thorne, 1788.

They were not all Thorne family members. There were other names: Jenkins, Wyatt, Dorsey, Beaumont. Names of people who had lived on or near the plantation. Some of them, Elias recognized from census records he had seen in Memphis: former slaves. Others: workers. Others: family.

He counted sixty-seven names.

Martha found him in the chamber. She stood at the top of the stairs and looked down at him with an expression that was not fear but something close to it.

"You shouldn't be down here," she said.

"What is this place?"

"It's where they kept the records."

"The names. Who are they?"

Martha was silent for a long time. Then: "People the land took."

"The land took them?"

"Not took. Required. There's a difference."

Elias climbed the stairs. "What do you mean?"

Martha descended slowly, carefully, as though the stairs were uneven. She was a large woman, and she moved with a deliberate grace that suggested she had spent her entire life being careful.

"Whose lives?"

Elias felt the lantern swing in his hand. "You're saying my father—"

"I'm saying the land demands payment. And the Thorne family has always provided it. Your father provided it. His father provided it. Their father before them. It is the Thorne burden. And it is now yours."

"No."

"Yes. You are a Thorne. The land knows it. You felt it when you put your hand in the soil. It called to you. It always calls to the Thorne blood. And now that your father is gone, it is calling to you more loudly."

Elias left the house that night and walked to the edge of the property, to the circle of dark grass. He knelt and put his hand in the soil. The pulse was strong. Insistent. Almost painful.

He thought of his father, dying in a Memphis hospital, his heart failing, his body wasting. He had assumed it was natural. He had assumed every man assumed it was natural.

But the journal had said: *I know better. The land has taken what it needs from me.*

Elias pulled his hand from the soil. It was covered in black earth. He stared at it and saw, in the moonlight, that the earth seemed to move, as though it were trying to get under his fingernails, into his skin, where it would stay.

He went to see Reverend Crowe.

James Crowe was the pastor of the Zion Baptist Church, a small white building on the edge of the plantation that had served the Black community of the delta for eighty years. He was a tall man, sixty years old, with a voice that could fill a church without a microphone.

When Elias told him what he had found, what he had learned, what Martha had said, Reverend Crowe listened without interrupting. When Elias finished, Reverend Crowe was silent for a long time.

Then he said, "My grandmother told me about this."

Elias sat down on the church steps. "About what?"

"The land. She said it was alive. She said the Thorne family made a deal with it before the war, before slavery ended, and that the deal was this: the Thorne family would feed the land, and the land would make them rich. She said the feeding was not metaphorical. She said people died. She said the graves were not marked."

"Sixty-seven names," Elias said. "I counted sixty-seven names in the chamber."

Reverend Crowe nodded. "My grandmother was one of the ones who knew. She was a servant in the Thorne house. She saw things. She heard things. And she survived, because she was small and quiet and the land did not find her interesting."

"What do I do?"

Reverend Crowe looked at him with eyes that were old and tired and full of a knowledge that Elias hoped he would never possess. "That is not my question to answer, Mr. Thorne. That is your question. And the answer is the same answer your grandfather faced, and his grandfather before him. You can become part of the land, or you can try to destroy it. But know this: if you destroy it, it will not simply die. It will rage. And the delta is a big place. If the land rages, it will take everything."

Elias walked back to Greenacres in the dark. The pulse in the soil was louder now. He could feel it through the soles of his shoes.

Miss Lavinia was waiting for him in the parlor. She sat in a high-backed chair by the fire, her hands folded in her lap, her eyes bright in the firelight.

"You've been talking to the preacher," she said. It was not a question.

"Yes."

"He told you the stories."

"He told me what his grandmother told him."

Miss Lavinia smiled. It was the same smile she had worn when Elias first arrived. Not a kind smile. "And what do you believe now, Elias? Do you believe in the gift?"

"I believe in the names in the chamber."

"Those are not names of victims. They are names of contributors. Every person in that chamber gave something to this land. Their sacrifice made Greenacres what it is. Their sacrifice made the Thorne family what it is. They are honored, not mourned."

"They're dead."

"Everyone is dead, Elias. The question is whether their death meant something. The Thorne family has been wealthy for three hundred years because of this land. Three hundred years of prosperity, built on a foundation of—of commitment. The land requires commitment. Your father was committed. I am committed. And now it is your turn."

Elias felt the pull. It was no longer faint. It was a current, pulling at his feet, his knees, his chest, his face. He could feel the soil beneath the house, beneath the foundation, beneath the floorboards, reaching up toward him, wanting him.

"I don't want it," he said.

Miss Lavinia stood up. She was small, but in the firelight she seemed large, as though she were casting a shadow that extended beyond the walls of the parlor. "You don't have a choice. You are a Thorne. The land chose you the moment you put your hand in the soil. You felt it. Don't lie to yourself."

Elias turned and walked out of the parlor and up the stairs and into his room and closed the door. He sat on the edge of the bed and he thought about Reverend Crowe's words: *If you destroy it, it will rage.* He thought about Miss Lavinia's eyes in the firelight. He thought about the sixty-seven names.

He took the lantern from the table and he went downstairs and he walked through the house, opening doors, checking windows. The front door was locked. The back door was locked. The windows were latched. He was inside a house that was, he now understood, part of the land. And the land did not want him to leave.

He went to the kitchen and took a bottle of kerosene from the shelf. He poured it on the curtains. On the rug. On the furniture. He moved through the house like a man in a dream, pouring kerosene on everything flammable, while the pulse in the soil grew louder and more urgent.

Miss Lavinia found him in the study, where he was pouring the last of the kerosene on his father's desk.

"What are you doing?" she said. Her voice was not loud. It was calm. Which was worse than shouting.

"Ending it."

"You can't. The land will—"

"I don't care what the land will do. I care what it has done. Sixty-seven names, Miss Lavinia. Sixty-seven people who died so that the Thorne family could be rich. I will not be part of it."

Miss Lavinia stepped closer. The firelight caught her face, and Elias saw something he had not seen before: fear. Not fear of the fire. Fear of what he was about to do.

"Elias," she said, and her voice was almost gentle. "You don't understand. The land is not evil. It simply is. It is a force, like rain or wind or lightning. It does not intend harm. It simply requires. And we provide."

"We murder people and call it requirement."

"We make sacrifices for prosperity. All families do. The difference is that we are honest about it."

Elias struck a match.

The flame was small and yellow and perfectly ordinary. He held it to the kerosene-soaked curtain.

The fire caught instantly. It spread with a speed that was almost impressive, consuming the curtains, the rug, the furniture, the books on the shelves. The heat was intense. The smoke was thick.

Miss Lavinia screamed.

It was not a human scream. It was a sound that came from somewhere deep and old, a sound that Elias heard in the chamber, in the soil, in the pulse beneath the house. It was the sound of the land itself, and it was angry.

Elias ran. He ran through the burning house, through smoke and flame and falling debris. He burst through the front door and stumbled onto the porch and ran down the steps and into the garden and into the overgrown field beyond.

Behind him, Greenacres Plantation burned. The flames rose into the night sky like a pillar of fire, visible for miles across the delta. The ground shook. The earth cracked. Elias felt it beneath his feet, a deep and violent tremor that lasted perhaps ten seconds and then stopped.

He stood in the field and watched the house burn and he felt the pulse in the soil change. It did not stop. It became something else: slower, deeper, angrier. As though the land had been wounded, not killed.

He turned and walked away. He did not know where he was going. He only knew he could not stay.

He walked through the night until dawn. When the sun came up, he was on a road, and a truck stopped, and the driver, a Black man with a kind face and tired eyes, asked him where he was going.

"Memphis," Elias said.

The driver nodded and opened the passenger door. Elias got in. They drove in silence for two hours. When they reached Memphis, the driver said, "Good luck, sir."

Elias got out. He had nothing with him except the clothes he was wearing and the memory of a house burning and a sound that was not human.

He walked to a boarding house on Peabody Place and rented a room for the week. He slept for eighteen hours. When he woke, he went to a restaurant and ordered breakfast and ate until he was full and had never felt fuller.

Then he went to a hardware store and bought a shovel.

He walked back to the road and found a truck that was going south and got a ride to Vicksburg. In Vicksburg, he bought another shovel and a can of kerosene. He walked to the edge of town, to a patch of empty land that had once been part of Greenacres and was now, he assumed, just land.

He dug. He dug a hole approximately six feet deep and three feet wide. He put the first journal in it—the one he had taken from his father's study. He put the shovel down and he dug again, deeper, until his hands bled.

When the hole was deep enough, he lowered himself in and began to dig downward, into the soil, into the pulse, into the thing that was not soil and not alive and not dead but something in between.

The earth closed over him.
