The Gray Deacon

I.

The coffee in Dirk Deacon's office had been sitting on a hot plate since four o'clock that morning. By now it was something between tar and regret, but Dirk drank it anyway because it was the only warm thing in the room and the only thing that kept his hands from shaking. He had stopped shaking three years ago, but sometimes the habit returned on rainy days, and today it was raining in Los Angeles—the kind of rain that doesn't wash anything clean but makes everything look slightly more like it's going to hell.

The phone rang at 11:17. It was an anonymous call. A man's voice, thin and nervous, speaking from somewhere that sounded like a public phone booth.

"Dirk Deacon?"

"That's who the sign says."

"There was an accident. March 15th. Venice Boulevard. Seven people died."

Dirk set down his coffee. It spilled over the side of the mug and onto the desk, but he didn't notice. "What about it?"

"A car. Hit them. Ran a red light. Driver was a woman—cotton blonde, pearl necklace, driving a Cadillac that cost more than my annual salary."

"I know what kind of car she was driving."

"You do?"

Dirk looked out the window. Rain was making lazy rivers across the glass. Outside, Los Angeles was doing what it always did—shining and lying, promising everything and delivering nothing. "The car was a 1951 Cadillac Series 62. Pink. The driver was Margaret Ashford, age nineteen. Her father is Councilman Richard Ashford of the Thirty-Third District."

The voice on the other end went quiet. Then: "How do you know that?"

"Because I knew one of the people she killed."

Another silence. Longer this time.

"Her name was Valerie Stone," Dirk said.

II.

Valerie Stone was twenty-five when she died, which in Los Angeles is approximately middle-aged. She had been a reporter once—a real reporter, not the kind of hack who writes puff pieces for the society pages or turns police blotters into human interest stories. She had actually reported things. She had actually dug.

Dirk had hired her five years ago, when he was still a cop and still believed that the badge meant something beyond protecting rich people's property. She had been the best informant he ever worked with. Sharp, ruthless, and most importantly, fearless. She had a face that made people underestimate her—small, dark-haired, always smiling in a way that made you think she wasn't paying attention—and she used that to her advantage like a knife.

Three days before she died, she had come to his office. He remembered it clearly: the smell of her perfume (cheap, citrusy, the kind you bought at a drugstore), the way she held her cigarette between two fingers instead of three, the intensity in her eyes that made you sit up straighter in your chair.

"Dirk," she had said, "I've got something that's going to shake up half the city hall. You don't want to hear it."

He had said: "Tomorrow."

He had said it because he was tired. He had said it because he had a headache. He had said it because going home to a one-room apartment with a bed that sagged in the middle and a refrigerator that contained nothing but a jar of mustard and a carton of milk from three days ago was more appealing than hearing whatever secret Valerie had unearthed.

He had said tomorrow. And tomorrow never came.

III.

Dirk's investigation was methodical, which was not something people who knew him would have predicted. He was not a methodical man. He was a fast man, a rough man, a man who broke windows and asked questions later. But Valerie had been methodical, and she had left behind a paper trail that required methodical handling.

He started with the seven names. Margaret Ashford's father had listed them as "pedestrians" in the official report—seven pedestrians struck by a vehicle traveling at approximately forty-five miles per hour. But Dirk had known Valerie, and he knew that she wouldn't have been walking on Venice Boulevard at that hour unless she was meeting someone or going somewhere important.

He found the first piece of the puzzle at the Department of Motor Vehicles, where a clerk he'd bought a bottle of whiskey for in 1952 remembered him and pulled a file without asking questions. Valerie Stone's car had been registered to a PO Box in a building on Flower Street. The PO Box had been rented by a man named Jack Calloway—Blind Jack Murphy, a retired boxer who ran a bar in Boyle Heights.

Dirk went to the bar. It was called The Golden Glove, and it was the kind of place where the neon sign had two letters out and the barstools had more patches than leather. Blind Jack was behind the bar, pouring a drink with hands that had been fists twenty years ago and were now something gentler, though still capable.

"Deacon," Jack said. Not a question. An acknowledgment. He had known Dirk when Dirk was on the force, and he had liked him for the same reason most people in rooms like this liked Dirk: he didn't pretend to be better than the room.

"I'm looking for information," Dirk said.

"You're always looking. It's your problem, not mine."

"This is about Valerie Stone."

Jack's hands stopped moving. The drink he was pouring overflowed the glass and ran across the bar, but he didn't notice. "What about her?"

"Did she meet someone on March 15th? Did she say she was going somewhere?"

Jack set down the pitcher. He turned around and leaned against the back shelf, where bottles of whiskey and bourbon lined up like soldiers waiting for orders. "Valerie was a busy woman, Dirk. She met a lot of people. She told me once that her favorite place in this town was any phone booth that wasn't occupied, because that meant she was the only one who knew something."

"Did she call you?"

Jack was quiet for a long time. Then: "The night she died, she called me from a booth on Main Street. She said she had 'the big one.' Said it was bigger than the protection racket, bigger than the jury manipulation. She said she was going to meet someone—someone important—and she was going to give him everything. Everything she had collected. All of it."

"Who was she meeting?"

"I don't know. But I know who she was meeting." Jack's good eye—the one that wasn't clouded by an old boxing injury—fixed on Dirk with the precision of a man who had spent twenty years hitting things he couldn't see. "Crane called me two days later. Asked if Valerie had been by the bar. I said no. He said she was a troubled young woman and he was just trying to help. I told him Valerie was the most trouble-free person I knew, and if he wanted to ask her questions, he could do it through the proper channels."

"Proper channels."

"Crane is the proper channel, Dirk. And proper channels are broken pipes. They leak everywhere and flood the basement and nobody cleans them because they're afraid of what's behind the wall."

IV.

The sixth victim was the hardest to find. Her name was Lucille Vaughn, and she was a widow who had moved to LA from Chicago after her husband—Charles Vaughn, a factory foreman—was killed when his factory's safety inspector "accidentally" locked the main exit door during a fire drill in 1948. Three workers died. Charles Vaughn was one of them.

Lucille had spent six years trying to get the factory owner prosecuted. She had failed. She had ended up working as a waitress at a diner on Western Avenue, surviving on tips and the stubborn refusal to be defeated.

Dirk found her at the diner on a Tuesday morning. She was behind the counter, refilling coffee for a man in a suit who was eating eggs and looking at a newspaper. When she saw Dirk, she didn't smile. She filled his cup and stood there, waiting.

"I'm looking into Valerie Stone's case," Dirk said.

Lucille's expression didn't change. But something shifted behind her eyes—the way a room changes when the temperature drops a degree. "What about it?"

"Was Valerie involved with your husband's case?"

Lucille set down the coffee pot. Her hands were red from hot water and cheap soap. "Charles was a good man. He believed in doing things right. When the fire happened, he was the one who tried to open the locked door. The owner said it was an accident. The inspector said it was an accident. The coroner said it was an accident."

She paused. Her voice went very quiet. "I said it was murder."

"Did Valerie know that?"

"I don't know if she knew specifically about Charles. But Valerie knew about the factory. She was writing a series on workplace safety. She was going to do a big piece on all the 'accidents' that happened to workers who spoke up. Seven of them, in the last five years. Seven accidents, seven dead workers, seven 'accidents' ruled by seven different coroners who all seemed to know the people who owned the factories."

Dirk felt something cold move through his chest. Not fear. Recognition. He had suspected this—had suspected that Valerie hadn't just stumbled onto something. She had been building a case. Methodically, ruthlessly, exactly the way she always worked.

"Who was she meeting on March 15th?" he asked.

Lucille looked at him for a long time. Then she reached under the counter and pulled out a matchbook. On the back, in small, precise handwriting, was a time and a place.

"She was going to meet someone who could confirm it all," Lucille said. "Someone inside the system. Someone who had seen the accidents happen and wasn't allowed to report them."

"Who?"

"That's the question, isn't it?" Lucille said. "The question is who."

V.

Dirk sat in Police Chief Harold Crane's private office at nine o'clock on a Saturday morning. Crane was not supposed to be there on a Saturday, but Dirk knew Crane's habits better than most men knew their own. On Saturday mornings, Crane came to the office to do paperwork that he couldn't do during the week when the reporters and the commissioners and the public were around.

Crane looked up when Dirk entered. He was a large man with a large face and large opinions about his own importance. He didn't seem surprised to see Dirk.

"Deacon," he said. "To what do I owe the displeasure?"

Dirk didn't sit down. He placed a single envelope on Crane's desk. It was thin—only a few pages inside. But the weight of those pages was enough to make Crane's expression shift, just slightly, from casual authority to something more alert.

"What's this?" Crane asked.

"The names," Dirk said. "All seven. The seven workers who died in 'accidents' over the last five years. The names of the factory owners who locked the doors, cut the exits, and skipped the safety inspections. The names of the inspectors who looked the other way because they had a percentage of the inspection budget in their pockets. And the name of the man who signed off on all of it."

Crane's face went very still. "Who gave you this?"

"No one gave me anything. I put it together. Valerie started—she always started. I finished."

Crane stood up slowly. He was a tall man, and when he stood, he took up more of the room, more of the air. "You don't know what you're doing, Deacon. You're a detective. You investigate burglaries and domestic disputes and the occasional murder that doesn't have a powerful sponsor. This—" he gestured at the envelope "—this is not your game."

"This is Valerie's game. And she's dead because she was playing it."

"Valerie was a nuisance," Crane said. His voice was still calm, but the calm was thinner now, stretched tighter. "She was a nuisance who thought she was important. That's a dangerous combination in this city."

"She found seven names," Dirk said. "She had them all. And then your daughter hit her car with hers, and the seven names went with her."

Crane's composure cracked. Just a hairline fracture, but Dirk saw it. "You're alleging that my daughter—"

"I'm alleging that seven people died on March 15th and nobody is investigating it properly. Seven people. Seven families. Seven mothers who will never see their children again because a nineteen-year-old with a Cadilliac and a trust fund drove through a red light."

He paused. Then: "Or maybe she didn't drive through a red light. Maybe she was following orders."

Crane said nothing. The silence that followed was the kind of silence that exists in rooms where a threat has been made and received and understood.

Dirk turned and walked to the door. He stopped with his hand on the handle.

"I'm not going to give this to the press," he said. "I'm going to give it to you. And I'm going to give you a choice: you can do the right thing, or I can do the wrong thing. And you know which one will get more attention."

Crane said: "You're making a mistake, Deacon."

Dirk looked back at him. "Maybe. But it's my mistake."

He left the envelope on the desk. He walked out of the office. He walked down the hallway. He walked out of the building.

He didn't go home. He went to a diner on Hill Street and ordered a cup of coffee and sat there for two hours, watching the rain continue to fall, thinking about Valerie and the seven names and the question of who was important enough to protect and who was expendable enough to erase.

He knew what he was going to do. He had known since he made the call from that anonymous phone booth three days earlier. He had known since he first read Valerie's name in the coroner's report.

He knew, but he was still going to do it. Because that's what you do when you've spent your whole life watching the wrong things win. You do the right thing, even if it's the last thing you do.

Even if it's just a mistake.
