The Seventh Light

I.

The fog on Whitechapel Road had a taste to it. Copper and coal and old rain. Clara Winslow pressed her face against the carriage window and watched it smear the gas lamps into watery halos. She was twenty-three years old and the most fortunate woman in London. Or so everyone would tell her in the weeks to come, each repetition making the words thinner, more impossible to swallow.

Seven women had died that evening. Seven faces the coroner would lay out in the parish mortuary on Fournier Street. Clara had not wanted to see them. But Lady Crawford—her mother, iron-gloved and implacable—had insisted. A Winslow did not hide from death.

So she went. She stood in that cold room and watched them bring them in, one by one, shrouded in linen that could not quite disguise the fact that they were all so small, so terribly light, as if the world had never bothered to fill them properly.

And then the last one was brought in. The shroud was pulled back. Clara stopped breathing.

The face was hers. Not similar. Hers. The same narrow nose, the same slightly crooked mouth, the same faint scar above the left eyebrow from when she had fallen from the pony at age six. It was like looking into a mirror that showed not who she was, but who she might have been in another life—a life of calloused hands and unmade beds and the sour smell of a boarding house room.

The undertaker said the woman's name was Helen Foster. Twenty-two years old. Washerwoman.

Clara went home in her mother's carriage and stood in her room until midnight and stared at her own face in the dressing mirror until the reflection became something foreign, something that belonged to the dead woman in the mortuary on Fournier Street.

II.

She began her investigations in December, when the frost made the cobbles dangerous and the gas lamps burned their last fuel by nine o'clock. Clara told her father she was visiting the Marylebone Relief Society. She told her mother she was learning to write charitable correspondence. She told most people what they expected to hear, and what they expected to hear was usually close enough to the truth to suffice.

The truth was she went to Whitechapel and St. Giles and Spitalfields, driving herself in a modest hackney coach because no one in her family was to know what she was doing. She found Martha Green, who ran a shelter for working girls in a converted warehouse near Commercial Road. Martha was fifty, severe, and suspicious.

"I don't know what you're doing, miss," Martha said, eyeing Clara's wool coat with the intensity of a creature that had learned to distrust generosity. "But charity comes with strings. Every last bit of it."

"I don't want strings," Clara said.

Martha studied her for a long moment. Then she sat down and told her about the seven women. Not names exactly—Martha was practical, names were dangerous—but types. A girl who worked twelve hours in a printing shop, her eyes going bad. A widow who sold flowers on Fleet Street, her children thin as sticks. A girl from the workhouse who could sing like an angel but had no voice because the air in the laundry had eaten it.

"They were people, miss. Not statistics. Not collateral damage in some nobleman's carriage accident."

Clara's hands were shaking. She pressed them flat against her knees. "I know who one of them was."

Martha's eyes sharpened. "Do you?"

"Helen Foster. I saw her face."

The silence that followed was the kind that exists in rooms where someone has just said something that cannot be unsaid.

"What happened?" Martha asked.

Clara told her. Everything. The accident, the mortuary, the mirror-face, the feeling that something had gone terribly, impossibly wrong—not just in the world, but in the arrangement of the world itself.

When she finished, Martha said: "You're going to do something foolish, aren't you?"

"Yes."

"Then I suppose I'd better help you."

III.

The most foolish thing she did was find Helen's sister. A child of twelve, named Ruth, who sold matches on the corner of Dorset Street and had survived because she had been sick in bed that night with a fever that nearly killed her.

Clara found her sitting on a bucket outside a collapsed tenement, wrapped in a blanket that was more holes than wool. The child looked up at her with eyes so large they seemed to take up most of her face.

"M'm?" she said.

Clara knelt. She was not a woman who knelt. It felt like breaking something inside her—a joint, perhaps, or a bone. "What's your name?"

"Ruth."

"Ruth. My name is Clara Winslow. And I—I need to talk to you about your sister."

The child said nothing. She just watched Clara with the wary, exhausted attention of someone who had learned that adults mostly said things they didn't mean.

Clara reached into her reticule and pulled out a document she had spent three days and forty pounds in solicitor's fees to create. It was a deed of transfer. Every property Clara Winslow owned. Every investment. Every shilling of her future dowry, already placed in a trust that would, upon her death—or upon her signing it over—belong entirely to Ruth Foster.

"I want you to have it," Clara said.

Ruth stared at the paper as if it were a dead bird. "Why?"

"Because my face is on the wrong side of things."

When Arthur Pendleton found out—Arthur, her fiancé, heir to the Pendleton earldom, a good man with kind eyes and a spine that bent only under his mother's weight—he came to the Winslow townhouse in a state of near-hysteria.

"This is insanity," he said. "You are giving your entire fortune to a matchseller in Whitechapel. Do you understand what you're saying?"

"Yes."

"Who gave you this idea?"

"No one. I gave it to myself."

Arthur took her hands. They were warm, familiar, the hands of a man she loved in the way one loves a pleasant room—one does not love it fiercely, but one is grateful for it. "Clara. Whatever happened that night—I know you carry it. But this—"

"This is what I have to carry it with."

IV.

She found the pregnant woman three weeks before Christmas. A laundry worker named Eliza Moore, living in a room above a butcher's shop in Bethnal Green. Clara went alone. She told no one.

Eliza was twenty, sitting on a thin mattress, her hands resting on a belly that was unmistakable. She looked at Clara with eyes that had already learned not to hope.

"You're not from the parish relief?" Eliza asked, when Clara had explained herself.

"No."

"Then you're not here to help. People from where you come from don't help. They take."

Clara sat on the edge of the mattress. The room smelled of boiled cabbage and damp plaster. "I was thinking of giving you something."

Eliza's expression didn't change. "My husband's dead. Was. Before the baby came. Fall from the scaffolding. The foreman said it was an accident. I say the scaffolding was rotten and he knew it." She touched her belly again. "But what good is that?"

Clara took out another document. A payment of fifty pounds, delivered monthly from her trust, to Eliza and her child. Enough to rent a proper room. Enough to eat. Enough, perhaps, to make the world less cruel by a small and measurable amount.

"You don't have to take it," Clara said.

"I'm pregnant," Eliza said simply. "I'll take it."

That night, walking home through streets that the fog had reduced to a series of isolated islands of yellow light, Clara felt something she could not name. Not peace. Not satisfaction. Something closer to grief—but grief for what, exactly? For the life she was giving away? For the seven women who would never get it back? Or for the terrible, incomprehensible fact that she was still here, moving through the fog, while they were not?

She didn't know. She would never know.

V.

She signed the deed of transfer on January third. Arthur was present. Martha Green was present. A solicitor from Lincoln's Inn was present. Ruth sat on a chair in the corner of the study, looking small and bewildered in a new dress that Clara had bought for her.

"Are you sure?" Arthur asked. His voice was very quiet. It was the voice of a man trying not to break something.

"Yes."

"You won't have anything left."

"I'll have what I need."

She did not tell him that she didn't know anymore what that was.

She moved to Arthur's mother's estate in Kent. She told everyone it was to rest—to recover from the strain of her charitable endeavors. Arthur's mother, Lady Pendleton, was not pleased but said nothing in front of guests. The servants whispered. The village gossiped. A Winslow had gone strange.

In the guest room at Pendleton Manor, Clara filled a small glass bottle with laudanum. She did not rush. She placed it on the nightstand beside her bed, next to a book of Tennyson that Arthur had given her for Christmas. On top of the book she placed a final letter.

It was not addressed to anyone in particular. It was addressed to no one. It read, in handwriting that was steady but not calm:

I don't know if what I did was right. Maybe it wasn't. Maybe seven women died in an accident and I survived, and then I tried to fix it with paper and money, and maybe that was meaningless. But I did it. I did it because the only other option was to pretend that the woman in the mortuary was not my double, that the child selling matches was not someone's daughter, that the pregnant washerwoman was not carrying a life that had as much right to exist as the baby growing fat in Lady Crawford's orchard.

I am not a saint. I am a woman who survived because of a accident of blood and bone and class, and I am giving that accident back. Not because I think it will change anything. But because I can.

The laudanum tasted of almonds and old medicine. She drank it slowly, watching the fire in the grate burn down to embers. Outside, the Kent wind moved through the ancient oaks with a sound like distant water.

She thought of Helen Foster's face. Her own face. The same face, on the wrong side of things. She wondered, for the last time, if the mirror had been showing her the truth or only a trick of the light.

She did not find out.

VI.

Ruth Foster inherited three townhouses in Mayfair, a portfolio of government consols worth twelve thousand pounds, and a country estate in Essex that no one had lived in for four generations. She was twelve years old. She did not understand most of what she had received.

Arthur Pendleton married another woman two years later. A kind woman with sensible opinions and a laugh that made people in the room feel warmer.

Lady Crawford Winslow never spoke of her daughter's charity. When people asked, she said Clara had always been impractical. A family trait, on her mother's side.

In a small flat above a butcher's shop in Bethnal Green, Eliza Moore held her daughter and looked at the monthly payment with eyes that had not yet learned to be grateful. She kept the money in a tin box under her mattress. She used it to buy better food, thicker blankets, a book for her daughter that told the story of a girl who flew.

The seven names of the women from the carriage accident were recorded in the coroner's register. They were entered in neat handwriting by a clerk who collected three shillings an hour and had a wife who was pregnant with their fourth child. He wrote the names without comment. He went home that evening and kissed his wife's forehead and said nothing about the dead women, because that was not something you spoke of at the dinner table.

The fog continued to roll in from the Thames. It would always roll in. No one owned the fog. No one could give it away.
