"Then why are you still here?"
He did not answer.

She walked past him, down the hall, through the front door, and into the storm.

The moors were a black ocean under the storm, the wind tearing at her clothes, the rain stinging her face like needles. She walked for hours, following the compass on Dr. Blackwood's pocket watch—west, toward the sea, toward freedom, toward whatever came next.
By dawn, she had reached a small village on the coast. A fisherman took her in, gave her dry clothes and hot tea and a place to sleep on his kitchen floor. She slept for twelve hours.
When she woke, she took out Genevieve's diary and read it one more time.

The fog was lifting. The sea was grey and endless. And Eleanor Vane, descendant of the Blackwoods and the Duvals and every "exceptional" girl they had tried to erase, walked toward it with her sword at her side and her head held high.
