I
The champagne flute caught the light of the chandelier like a fragment of something fragile and golden. Julian Cross held it in his hand and watched the bubbles rise, one by one, like prayers he did not know how to say.
Across the room, a brass band played something upbeat and meaningless. Couples swirled across the parquet floor of the Long Island mansion, their laughter bright and hollow as the pearls around their necks. It was 1925, and the party went on and on and on, and Julian stood at the edge of it all, a soldier in a suit that didn't quite fit, wondering how he had arrived at this moment and why he felt so thoroughly absent from it.
Beatrice found him on the terrace. She was wearing a dress the colour of midnight, and her hair was cut into a bob that made her look younger than twenty-seven—or perhaps older, in a way that had nothing to do with years. She had been a nurse in the AEF, and Julian had met her at a hospital where she treated his shoulder and he treated her with a reverence she neither asked for nor wanted.
"You're hiding," she said. It wasn't a question.
"I'm observing," he corrected. "There's a difference."
She leaned against the stone balustrade and looked out at the gardens. Fireflies moved through the dusk like scattered embers. "You've been different since you came back," she said. "Different from before the war. I mean, different from different."
He wanted to tell her about the diagnosis. The doctor in Boston had been gentle, clinical, helpful in the way that people who have never needed to be helped can be. Julian nodded, because nodding was something soldiers were good at, and went home and sat in his apartment in Queens for two weeks and stared at the ceiling.
"I want a family," he said instead.
Beatrice turned to look at him. The fireflies lit her face in flashes, and for a moment she looked like a painting—something by Sargent, all shadows and light and the suggestion of something unsaid.
"Julian," she said carefully.
"I know. I know what people would say. But—" He broke off, looked down at his champagne flute, and set it down on the balustrade with a click that sounded far too loud in the quiet. "I want something that's mine, Bea. Something that doesn't remind me of what I can't do."
She was silent for a long time. Then: "You can't just want a family like you want a new hat, Julian."
"I know that too."
II
Leo arrived on a rain-soaked Saturday in October. He was three years old, or nearly three. The woman who brought him—Mrs. O'Connell, a gaunt creature with kind eyes and shaking hands—told them her sister in Philadelphia couldn't keep him anymore. The sister was a widow with five other children and no husband and a tuberculosis that was eating her from the inside. Mrs. O'Connell didn't look at Julian or Beatrice when she said the word widow. She looked at the floor.
Leo carried nothing but a small canvas bag with a shirt and a pair of socks and a wooden soldier that had lost one of its legs. He stood in the foyer of their apartment in the Upper West Side and clutched that bag and stared at the patterned carpet as if it contained the answers to every question he had ever asked.
"Come on, sweetheart," Beatrice said, crouching down to his level. "Let me show you your room."
Leo did not look up.
Julian watched from the top of the stairs, and he felt something twist inside him—not guilt, exactly, but the memory of guilt, like the phantom ache in a limb that isn't there.
Beatrice took Leo's hand. Her hand was small and warm and smelled of antiseptic and lavender. She led him up the stairs, and he followed, still not looking at her, still watching the carpet as if it were a map he was learning to read.
The first month was a war without battles. Beatrice fed Leo oatmeal and he refused it. She tried rice pudding and he pushed the bowl away. She tried bread and butter and he stared at it with an expression of profound philosophical opposition. She stopped trying. She bought him toys—a ball, a block set, a book with pictures of animals—and he played with none of them.
At night, he slept in the small bedroom she had prepared with yellow wallpaper and a crib that she had painted blue. He lay in it and stared at the ceiling and did not cry, the way children do when they have learned that crying gets you nothing.
Julian tried. God knew he tried. He built Leo up on his shoulders and carried him around the living room like a horse, and Leo allowed this with the detached tolerance of a king permitting his subjects their follies. He read to Leo from a book of Aesop's fables, and Leo listened with one ear, his attention elsewhere.
Beatrice watched all of this from the kitchen doorway, her arms folded, her expression unreadable.
"He'll come around," Julian said to her one evening. "He just needs time."
Beatrice said nothing. But later that night, when Julian was asleep, she went into Leo's room and sat on the edge of his bed and watched him sleep. And in the pale light from the streetlamp outside, something in her chest—something that had been clenched tight since she left the field hospital in France, something that had been clenched tight through the wedding and the champagne and the war and the silence between them for two years—loosened.
Leo's mouth was open slightly as he breathed. His fingers were curled into a fist. He looked, Beatrice thought, like every child she had held in the triage tent—small, breathing, alive in a world that had no business keeping them so.
She reached out and gently uncurled his fist and placed her finger in his palm.
He did not wake. But his fingers closed around hers, the way babies do, the way they do without thinking.
Beatrice sat there in the dark and let him hold her finger and thought: this is what it means to be broken and still hold on.
III
The breaking point came on a Tuesday in February. Beatrice had been up since five, making breakfast, ironing Julian's shirts, preparing Leo's lunch (which she packed whether he ate from it or not). Julian had left for his office at eight-thirty without kissing her goodbye. The apartment smelled of burnt toast and floor wax and the faint sourness of a child who had not yet mastered the art of being clean.
Leo had refused to wear his coat. Beatrice had knelt in the hallway and tried to persuade him, and he had pushed her away with a violence that surprised them both. "Leave me alone!" he had screamed—a word she had never taught him, a word he had learned somewhere else, from someone else, from a world she had never seen.
She stood in the hallway and watched him storm into his room and slam the door. She stood there for a long time. Then she went to the kitchen and sat at the table and put her head in her hands and made a sound that was not quite a sob and not quite a laugh.
It was Julian who found her. He had come home early—something about a client cancelling—and he found her sitting at the kitchen table, her shoulders shaking silently, her hands pressed so hard against her face that her knuckles were white.
He sat down beside her. He did not touch her. He just sat there, and after a while she lowered her hands and looked at him, and her face was full of everything she had been carrying for months.
"He pushed me," she said. "He pushed me and I felt—" She stopped. She started again. "I felt relieved. I felt relieved because it meant he was alive enough to push me. And then I felt terrible for feeling relieved."
Julian reached across the table and took her hand. It was the first time he had initiated contact in months. "Bea—"
"He's not our son, Julian. He's never been our son. He's a child who doesn't want to eat the food we give him, who doesn't want to wear the clothes we buy him, who doesn't want to be near us. And I'm supposed to be grateful."
"I know."
"And you're going to say that he'll come around. And you're going to say that he needs time. And I'm going to say that I've given him two months and I'm nothing if not patient, and you're going to say patience is a virtue."
"I was going to say that."
She looked at him then—really looked at him—and she saw, for the first time since he had come home from the war, the full weight of what he was carrying. The invisible wound. The one that didn't show on a doctor's certificate. The one that made him build pretend families out of desperation and good intentions and love that didn't know how to express itself.
She reached across the table and took his face in her hands. She held it there while her tears fell onto his cheeks, and Julian Cross—a soldier, a man, a husband who had tried to buy happiness from a gaunt Irishwoman on a rainy Saturday—closed his eyes and leaned into her touch like a man finding water in the desert.
IV
Leo came around in spring. Not with a bang, but with a question.
They were in the park on a Sunday afternoon. Julian was pushing Leo on the swing—Leo had started enjoying this, though he would never admit it—and Beatrice sat on a bench reading a newspaper she wasn't really absorbing.
"Uncle Julian," Leo said.
Julian stopped the swing. "Yeah, buddy?"
"Why is my hair so curly?"
Julian laughed. "Because it is. That's just how it is."
"And Mama's hair is straight?"
"She likes it straight. She wears a hat sometimes."
Leo swung for a moment in silence. Then: "Can I call you Uncle Julian forever?"
Julian's throat tightened. "You can call me whatever you want, bud."
The question came again a week later, directed at Beatrice. "Mama."
She was ironing at the kitchen table. The iron hissed against the fabric. She looked up.
Leo was standing in the doorway, his curly hair sticking up in every direction, his wooden soldier in one hand, his canvas bag over his shoulder as if he were preparing for an expedition.
"Mama?" he said again, more uncertain this time.
Beatrice set the iron down. She walked over to him and knelt down—just as she had done in the hallway, just as she had done in the dark of his bedroom—and she took his face in her hands and she said, very clearly: "Yes, sweetheart?"
Leo smiled. It was not the wary, uncertain smile of the boy who had arrived on that rainy Saturday. It was a different smile—brighter, less guarded, the smile of a child who has decided, perhaps for the first time, that he is safe.
Beatrice held him then, and he let her hold him, and she felt something inside her click into place like a key finding its lock.
Outside, New York buzzed and sang and danced to a jazz band that nobody in their living room could hear. Inside, Beatrice Cross held her son in her arms and let herself believe, just for a moment, that maybe broken things could be put back together—not the same as they were, never the same, but whole in a different way.
