The Locked Observatory

The Edinburgh Astronomical Society had been closed for a decade when Dr. Catherine Vance broke in. The building was a monument to Victorian ambition, all brass instruments and painted ceilings and the peculiar confidence of men who believed they could map God's creation.

She came for the telescope. Or so she told herself.

The observatory dome was stuck, fused shut by decades of neglect. She spent three hours with a crowbar before it gave way, admitting a shaft of moonlight that fell across the floor like a searchlight.

The telescope was pointed at nothing. A perfect void between stars.

But through the eyepiece, she saw something.

A city. Or the idea of a city—spires and domes and lights that might have been streetlamps or might have been stars. It flickered at the edge of perception, there and not-there, like a word on the tip of the tongue.

She looked for six hours. She saw nothing else.

When dawn came, she understood that she would return. That she would spend the rest of her life returning.
