The Ordinary Years

I have lived long enough to understand that most of life is ordinary. The extraordinary moments—the weddings, the funerals, the births, the betrayals—are just punctuation marks in a long, slow sentence of mornings and evenings and the particular way light falls through kitchen windows in October.

My mother called it "living." My father called it "waste." They argued about it for thirty-seven years, until my father's heart stopped in the middle of a Tuesday, and my mother's grief was so ordinary that she simply continued, the way she always had, the way she always would.

I think about them often, now that I am their age. I think about the arguments, the silences, the way they would sometimes look at each other across the dinner table as if remembering something they had decided not to say.

The extraordinary thing, I have learned, is not what happens to us.

The extraordinary thing is that we continue.
