The Janitor's Third Eye
ACT I - THE ARRIVAL
We took the house on Sevenacres Lane because the rent was absurd. That alone should have warned me, but Clara was enchanted from the first moment she saw the front steps, and I will always hold that her enchantment was worth far more than the sixty-five shillings we paid each month for five spacious rooms above a bakery in Whitechapel.
The house stood at the end of a short cul-de-sac that no map seemed to acknowledge. When Mr. Umbrella, the caretaker, opened the door for us on that damp October evening, I noted first his hands: they were too large for a man of his stooped build, with fingers that seemed to possess one joint too many. Second, I noted his silence. He did not speak as he showed us through the parlor, the dining room, the kitchen with its cast-iron range. He merely pointed, his head slightly tilted, as though listening to something we could not hear.
'Everything is as you see it, sir,' he said at last, and his voice was like dry leaves scraping over stone. 'The lower door is locked. Do not trouble to unlock it.'
Clara smiled at me, a small tight smile, and I thought I saw her glance again at the back of Mr. Umbrella's head as he turned to leave. His collar was high, too high for the season, and it concealed entirely the nape of his neck.
That night, in the room we had chosen at the rear of the second floor, Clara could not sleep. The house groaned in a manner I had never encountered in any ordinary dwelling. It was not the settling of timbers or the expansion of pipes. It was deeper, rhythmic, mechanical.
'Rick,' she whispered from the dark, 'there is something beneath this house.'
'I believe everything has something beneath it, my dear.'
'No. Not beneath. Within.'
I turned to face her, but she was already still, her breathing the uneven breathing of someone attempting conscious sleep. I lay awake until dawn and told myself it was merely the gas lamps of Whitechapel keeping us awake, the omnibus wheels on cobblestones, the city that never truly ceases its low murmur of commerce and suffering.
ACT II - THE DESCENT
It was Clara who found the door. Three nights later, drawn from sleep by a sound she described as 'a great machine breathing.' She descended the back stairs in her nightgown, barefoot on the cold stone, and found the door at the bottom of the cellar stairs standing open. It had been locked when we arrived. She was certain of it.
She went down. I learned this the following morning when she told me, her face pale in the gaslight, her hands clasped like a prayer. The chamber below was vast, far vaster than the house above could possibly contain. The walls were not brick but metal, riveted and painted a dull grey. And at its center, filling the entire space from floor to vaulted ceiling, was a machine unlike anything she had ever seen.
'It was not coal-fired,' she said. 'It was not steam. It hummed, Rick. It hummed with a light inside it, a pale blue light that made my teeth ache.'
I should have gone with her. I told myself I would, but the office called me each morning, and Mr. Pembroke's cases left no room for my wife's phantasms.
Then came the evening of the third night, when Clara awakened from a nightmare screaming. I lit the candle and followed the sound to the doorway, where I saw her standing, staring at the crack beneath Mr. Umbrella's door across the hall. The light from the corridor fell across the back of his neck as he passed, and in that moment, between one heartbeat and the next, I saw it too.
On the back of Mr. Umbrella's head, just above the collar that never came down, was an eye. A third eye, set flush with the skin, pale and lidless, and it turned slowly, independently, to look down the corridor in the opposite direction from his face.
I did not sleep that night. I sat in the parlor with the candle burning low and listened to the machine beneath the house breathe.
The next morning I went to see Dr. Whitmore, who lived three streets over and had treated Clara's fever in our first month. I told him nothing at first. I asked him about caretakers, about men who lived in the basements of large houses, about whether any such man had come to his attention.
Dr. Whitmore set down his newspaper. His face grew very still.
'You saw it too,' he said. It was not a question.
'What do you mean?'
'Three months ago, my wife saw something on the back of the caretaker's head in her house on Commercial Street. She thought she was ill. I prescribed rest. Then last week, I saw it myself, from my window, across the street. I told my wife I was going out for air and I stood on the pavement and I watched him walk past our door and I saw, from the angle only someone at a window could see.'
'What was it?'
'A second eye, Edward. Below the first. Or above the nape. I cannot describe it more precisely because I did not dare approach him.'
ACT III - THE ENGINE ROOM
Four of us met at midnight on a night so dark the gas lamps seemed to dim in fear. Clara, Dr. Whitmore, myself, and a woman named Mrs. Haversham who lived on the third floor and had heard, she said, 'things that no Christian ought to hear.' We carried candles wrapped in cloth, for light would betray us, and we moved through the lower door like thieves in our own home.
The engine room took my breath, though I have witnessed the interior of the Crystal Palace and found it less astonishing. The machine was vast beyond comprehension, a column of pale blue fire surrounded by rings of metal that turned with a silence so complete I could not tell if they were moving at all. The heat was immense, but it was not the heat of fire. It was the heat of something alive, something that had been waiting.
Clara was beside me, and I felt her hand find mine. Her grip was fierce, desperate.
'I knew it,' she whispered. 'I knew it from the first moment.'
Then I saw the magazine. An old publication, discarded on a shelf of iron, its pages yellow with age but its illustrations unmistakable. I had seen such illustrations before in the scientific journals my father collected. They depicted engines of a kind the Royal Society had long dismissed as impossible. Engines designed not for travel upon the earth but for travel through the heavens.
'Rockets,' I breathed. 'Those are rocket engines.'
Dr. Whitmore made a sound I will always remember: a small animal noise of pure terror. 'Then this house is not a house.'
'No,' I said. 'It is something that wears a house like a skin.'
The floor trembled. Not a vibration, not the ordinary settling of an old building. A deliberate motion, as though a great creature had begun to stir in its sleep. The candle flames bent in a direction there was no wind to explain.
We ran. We burst through the upper doors, up the stairs, through the parlor where the wallpaper hung in strips like dead skin. Clara was ahead of me, her hand on the front door handle, and she pulled with all her strength.
It would not open.
'Locked,' she said. 'Edward, it is locked from the outside.'
The windows. We went to the windows. I threw mine open and felt the resistance of bars that had not been there before. Or perhaps they had always been there and I had simply never seen them, blind to the architecture of our captivity.
ACT IV - THE ASCENT
We shattered the glass with the marble candlestick and climbed out onto the fire escape, Clara's hand in mine, slipping on dew and rust. Below us, the street was filling with people. Doors had opened along Sevenacres Lane and all the surrounding streets, and families poured into the October air in their nightclothes, their faces upturned.
The house beneath my feet was shaking with a violence that threw me to one knee. Dust rained from the ceiling. The brickwork groaned and cracked like timber under pressure.
'The building!' someone screamed.
But it was not the building. I saw it then, with a clarity that froze the blood in my veins. The walls of the street were rising. Not the walls of the houses, but the street itself, the pavement, the gutters, the lamp posts, the church on the corner, the pub, the bakery. All of it lifting together, as one great platform on the back of something immeasurably vast.
Sevenacres Lane was not a street. It was a deck. And we were all passengers.
Mr. Umbrella stood at the corner of the lane, where the pavement met the road. He was not looking at the sky. He was looking at us. All three of his eyes were open, and they fixed upon me with a calm recognition that was worse than any violence. He knew we knew. He had known we would know. And there was nothing to be done about it, because the engine was already running, and the sky was already ours to lose.
Clara squeezed my hand until I thought she might break my bones. Together we stood on the rising pavement and watched Whitechessel dissolve beneath us, block by block, London dissolving, the Thames a ribbon of silver being drawn up into the black.
I do not know where we are going. I do not know if I will ever see the earth again. But I hold my wife's hand, and in the pale blue light of the engine that carries us, I find that this is enough.
