The Golden Dream
The invitation arrived on a Tuesday, slipped under my door like something that knew exactly what it was doing. Cream-colored card stock, no stamp, no address. Just three lines in elegant copperplate:

Ask for Daisy
I should have thrown it away. I was twenty-eight years old, shell-shocked and useless, living in a walk-up on the Upper East Side where the radiator clanked like a dying animal and the landlady charged extra for hot water. I had been discharged from the army with nothing but a medal and the ability to jump at gunfire. I did not have the luxury of being discerning.
So on Thursday at eleven-thirty, I found the speakeasy on Forty-Second Street.
The entrance was behind a liquor store in the East Village, down a flight of concrete stairs that smelled of gin and mildew. A man with a scar across his chin let me in after I said the word Daisy. The speakeasy was crowded—men in pinstripe suits, women in fringed dresses, the air thick with smoke and the sound of a jazz band playing something fast and desperate.
And then I saw her.
Daisy Vanhorne sat at a corner table in a dress the color of champagne. She was twenty-five, maybe younger, with dark hair cut in a bob and eyes that looked like they had seen the end of the world and decided to dance anyway. She was laughing at something a man in a silver tie said, and when our eyes met, she stopped laughing and held my gaze for a beat too long.
"Julian Mercer," she said when I approached. Her voice was low and deliberate, like she knew exactly what it did to people. "I've been expecting you."
"How do you know my name?"
She smiled. "Sit down."
The Golden Room was not a room so much as a basement beneath the speakeasy, accessed through a velvet curtain behind the bar. The walls were mirrored, the ceiling painted with stars. In the center sat a single leather couch and a glass table with a small crystal bottle on it.
"This," Daisy said, gesturing to the space, "is where we trade in the only thing that matters anymore."
"Which is?"
"Dreams. Not the nonsense you have when you sleep—real dreams. The ones you carry around during the day. The ones that keep you getting out of bed." She poured two fingers of something amber into a crystal glass. "Sit."
I sat. She pressed the glass into my hand. "Drink."
It tasted like cognac and regret. I set the glass down. "What is this?"
"A key. In a minute, you'll close your eyes and Reginald will guide you into a dream that isn't yours. You'll experience it as if it were your own. When you wake up, you'll remember everything."
"And then what?"
"Then you pay."
The man named Reginald Crosby turned out to be everything you'd expect from a Wall Street broker in 1926—expensive suit, expensive watch, expensive teeth. He sat beside me on the couch, placed his hands lightly on my temples, and began to count backward from ten.
When I closed my eyes, I was somewhere else entirely.
I was standing on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, and I was holding a phone that connected me to a buyer in London who wanted a thousand shares of something I couldn't name, and I sold them for a price that made my hands shake, and when I hung up, the room erupted and Reginald was laughing and I was laughing too because I was rich—I was impossibly, fantastically rich—and I could feel the weight of hundred-dollar bills in my pockets and I could smell the leather of my custom-made shoes and I was—
"Julian."
I opened my eyes. Reginald was watching me with a small, satisfied smile. Daisy was sitting in a chair nearby, her chin resting on her hand, watching me with something I couldn't identify.
"How was it?" Reginald asked.
"I was—" I stopped. The words felt strange in my mouth. "I was rich."
"Exactly." Daisy stood and walked over. "That was Reginald's dream. Not what happened—what he dreamed would happen. We experience the fantasies men like him construct when no one is watching."
Every night for the next six nights, I returned to the Golden Room.
Night two: I dreamed I was a poet, and the words came to me like rain, and I wrote something so beautiful that the woman I loved wept when she read it.
Night three: I dreamed I was standing in a field of wheat in Kansas, and a child—my child, though I had never had a child—ran toward me calling Daddy, and I picked her up and she smelled like sunscreen and grass.
Night four: I dreamed I was old and sitting on a porch somewhere warm, and my wife was dead but I had loved her for fifty years and it had been enough, more than enough, it had been everything.
Night five: something went wrong. I went to dream and instead of the curated fantasies Daisy offered, I found something darker. A man in a dark room, beating a woman. She wasn't making a sound. I tried to look away but the dream held me there, and when I woke up, my hands were clenched so tightly my nails had drawn blood from my palms.
"What was that?" I asked Daisy. She wouldn't meet my eyes.
"A guest who didn't know they were dreaming," she said finally. "We don't always get to choose."
Night six, she told me the truth.
"The dream bank isn't about entertainment, Julian. It's about memory. Every time you enter someone else's dream, you lose a piece of your own. Not much—just a fragment. A corner of who you were. Over time, you forget why you came to New York. You forget the sound of your mother's voice. You forget what it felt like to be brave."
"I don't want to forget."
"You already have. Think about it. How much of the war do you remember clearly? The parts you can still see in your head at three in the morning? Those aren't memories anymore, Julian. Those are other people's dreams. Reginald lost the memory of his first kiss. Tommy—my driver—forgot his sister's face. You've already lost something. I can see it in your eyes."
Night seven: the full moon. The biggest night of the month. The most expensive.
I arrived at midnight and found Daisy waiting in the Golden Room, alone. She looked smaller than usual, like the mirrors had shrunk her.
"One more night," she said. "You can live in the dream forever. That's what most people want, eventually. Why wake up when you can stay in a room full of gold?"
"Because it isn't gold," I said. "It's someone else's."
She laughed, but it sounded broken. "You sound like someone I used to know."
"Who was that?"
She was quiet for a long time. "Her name was Helen. She was from Cincinnati. She came to me because she'd lost everything in the earthquake—her house, her family, her reason for getting up. I gave her dreams that weren't hers, and she forgot she had lost anything at all. She stayed for eleven months. Then one morning she just sat down at the table and couldn't get up. Her heart just—stopped. She was twenty-four years old."
I looked at her. "That's you. You're still in that room."
She looked away. "I know."
I stood up. "Come with me."
"Where?"
"Out. Into the world. It's ugly and it's broken and I lost part of myself in France and I don't know how to fix it. But it's mine. And I want to spend the rest of my life figuring out what to do with what's left."
She looked at me for a very long time. Then she stood, took my hand, and walked through the velvet curtain without looking back.
We didn't make it far. By morning, the police raided the speakeasy, and the Golden Room was just another room in a room nobody would ever visit again. Daisy vanished somewhere between the raid and the courthouse. I never saw her again.
But sometimes, in the quiet hours before dawn, I close my eyes and I feel a phantom warmth on my skin, like sunlight through a window in a house I never had, and I wonder if she's standing in a field of wheat somewhere, holding a child that doesn't exist, and finally, finally waking up.
