The fog came in off the Thames like a living thing, pressing against the windowpanes of my garret room in Whitechapel with a wet, insistent hand. "My husband," she said, before I could ask. "He had an accident. On the road. His head was hurt. He's different now."

"Different how?"

She smiled. It was a small, fragile thing. "He's gentle. He doesn't shout. He doesn't—" She stopped. "Thank you, miss. For your kindness."

I visited three days later, carrying a apron I had sewn myself. The door was answered by Mrs. Hargrave, who led me into a parlor that was immaculate in a way that felt wrong. I stared at him. He turned back to the fire. I waited.

And then she told me. Ten years of violence. The night she had taken the poker to his skull. The yard automata services—an underground workshop in Spitalfields where they built mechanical replacements for broken men. Five hundred pounds, borrowed from a cousin who would never ask questions. The careful assembly, the winding of the mainspring, the programming of three simple phrases.

"I didn't have a choice," she said. "He was going to kill me eventually. You know that. Everyone knows that."

I stood there, holding my sewing basket, listening to a woman confess to murder in her perfectly clean parlor, surrounded by geraniums and the smell of machine oil.

When she finished, the room was silent except for the ticking of the automaton's internal mechanism. A soft, steady ticking, like a heart made of metal.

I set down my basket. I thought of my own William. Three years dead, consumed by the fever that took so many in the winter of '85. The automaton that came every morning at seven, left for work at eight, returned at six. Never spoke more than two words. Never asked questions. Never raised his voice.

"Mrs. Hargrave," I said. "You need not fear me."

I looked at the automaton by the fire. It was repeating its phrase for the third time.

"Thank you, kind lady. A fine day, is it not?"

"My husband died three years ago," I said. "The man who walks to work every morning and returns every evening—William—he is not real. He is an automaton, too. From the same workshop, I believe. Spitalfields, if I'm not mistaken."

Mrs. Hargrave lowered the revolver slowly. Her eyes filled with tears. Not tears of relief. Tears of recognition.

Outside, the fog pressed against the window. The automaton ticked. The geraniums sat on the windowsill, red and artificial in the gray light.

And then—

A sound. From the street below. Or perhaps from inside the wall. Perhaps from inside me.

I cannot say whether the revolver was fired. I cannot say whether Mrs. Hargrave lowered it, or whether I turned and ran, or whether we stood there together in the ticking silence, two women bound by the same terrible secret.

The fog did not care. It pressed against the window. It would press against the window tomorrow. And the day after. And the day after that.

In Whitechapel, the walls are thin. And the things that happen behind them are nobody's business but their own.
