The magnolias on the Beauregard property had bloomed early that year, their white flowers thick and heavy on the branches like candles that someone had lit and forgotten to blow out. Jesse Beauregard noticed them on his way to the bayou, where he spent his mornings cutting cordwood for the neighbors who still paid in cash instead of IOUs.

The Beauregard estate — what was left of it — sat on a rise above the town of St. Mary's, Louisiana. It had been a proper plantation once, before the war and before the flood and before the money ran out like water through a cracked bucket. Now it was two hundred acres of overgrown fields and a house with twelve rooms and only four that were warm enough to sleep in.

Jesse lived in the side house, a small structure that had once been the overseer's quarters. His mother, Mama Beauregard, lived with him. "Next time," LeBlanc said gently, "pay the right amount. The world does not need more generosity from boys who have nothing. It needs honesty."

Jesse paid the correct amount and left with his lard and his shame.

When he got home, Mama heard about it immediately. She did not yell. She rarely yelled. She said, very quietly: "Jesse, the Beauregard name is all we have left. If we are honest about the small things, people will believe we are honest about the big things. Do you understand?"

"Yes, Mama."

"Good. Because tomorrow you are going back to LeBlanc and you are going to return the five cents. Not because you owe him money. Because you owe him the truth."

"Jesse," he said, "I have something to tell you."

Jesse waited.

"When the river fish float belly up — all of them, in one day — you must leave. You take your mother. You take anyone who will come with you. The water is coming. Big water. Bigger than anything this bayou has seen."

Jesse stared at him. "How big?"

"Big enough to take the town," LeBlanc said simply. "Big enough to take the plantation. Big enough to take everything."

"When?"

"Soon. When you see the fish."

Jesse nodded. He did not believe him — not completely. Old men said things. LeBlanc had lived through two hurricanes and a flood and the death of his wife and the loss of his son in the war, and sometimes that made a person prophetic and sometimes it just made them old and worried about everything.

But he remembered. He carried LeBlanc's words with him like a stone in his pocket.

Remy was Mama's cousin — not her real cousin, she was too proud for real cousins, but a cousin in the way that Southern families use the word: someone who is related by blood and hated for it. Remy was forty, drunk since he was twelve, and possessed of a cruel sense of humor that he expressed through practical jokes that were never funny and sometimes dangerous.

Remy went to the bayou on a Monday morning, filled a wheelbarrow with dead catfish he had pulled from the depths the night before, and dumped them on the bank in a neat row, all belly-up, all white and round and unmistakable.

Then he went to the bar and told everyone: "The bayou is killing its fish. The river is sick. The end of the world is coming."

He told this with a straight face and a worried voice, the way a prophet might tell it, except that Remy's prophets always smelled like whiskey and carried a switchblade.
