The Weight We Keep
What You Carry
The shop smelled like old wood and dust and the faint metallic tang of things that had been owned by other people and then abandoned. Caroline sat behind the counter with a cup of coffee that had gone cold two hours ago and a ledger that she was trying to make add up, which was something she did most mornings and which never succeeded.
Miller's Pawn & Furniture was on Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, in a building that had once been a shoe store and before that had been something else that Caroline couldn't remember because she had only owned the shop for four years and four years is not long enough to accumulate the kind of institutional knowledge that keeps a city's history alive.
It was a Tuesday in March. The weather was doing that thing Cleveland weather does in March—sunny one hour, sleeting the next, and by dinner time it would be warm enough that the snow on the sides of the streets would melt and create rivers of dirty water that flowed into the gutters and carried everything toward the lake.
Ray was on his usual bench across the street. He was an older man, maybe seventy, maybe older, with a weathered face and a coat that had been brown once and was now the color of something you couldn't quite identify. He talked to anyone who would listen and people who wouldn't. He claimed to have been a union organizer in the seventies. Nobody knew if this was true. It didn't matter. He was harmless, which in Cleveland was more than most people could say for themselves.
The door chime rang. Caroline looked up from her ledger. Dave walked in, which was unusual because he usually came home before the shop closed. He worked at a hardware store on Carnegie Avenue and got off at five. It was three-thirty.
"You're early," she said.
"I didn't go in today."
She looked at him. He was standing in the doorway, his hands in his jacket pockets, his shoulders hunched in that way of his that made him look like he was apologizing for existing. His face was blank—not angry, not sad, just blank, which was sometimes worse.
"Everything alright?" she asked.
"Yeah. Just. Needed to not go."
She nodded. "Lunch is in the fridge. Help yourself."
He nodded back and walked through the doorway that led to the apartment above the shop. The door clicked shut. Caroline looked back at her ledger. The numbers didn't add up. They never did.
Kristine arrived at four o'clock on a Wednesday, which meant she had not called ahead, which meant Caroline should have been annoyed but wasn't, because annoyance required energy she didn't always have.
Kristine was thirty-three, which made her five years younger than Caroline. She looked older. She always looked older than her age, which Caroline attributed to two things: smoking two packs a day and carrying around a constant low-grade resentment that was like wearing a backpack filled with bricks.
"Hey," Kristine said, dropping her duffel bag on the floor with a thud that sent a cloud of dust into the air.
"Hey," Caroline said.
"I need a place to stay for a few days."
"You're in Chicago."
"I know."
"Then why are you in Cleveland?"
Kristine looked at her the way she always looked at Caroline: with a mixture of expectation and resentment, as though Caroline existed to serve her needs and was failing in that duty. "I have some things to deal with."
"What things?"
Kristine reached into her duffel bag and pulled out a notebook. It was a standard composition notebook—the kind you buy at Walmart for a couple dollars. The spine was cracked. The cover was stained. Caroline recognized it immediately.
"Where did you get that?" she asked.
"From Mom's things. After Marcus died."
Caroline felt something shift inside her, like a gear slipping out of place. "Marcus Webb."
"Yeah."
"What about him?"
Kristine opened the notebook to a random page and handed it to Caroline. Caroline took it and looked at the handwriting: neat at first, with names and dates and numbers organized in columns that suggested someone who was used to keeping records and maintaining order. But as the pages filled, the handwriting changed—became shakier, more hurried, the margins narrower, as though the writer was running out of space and running out of time simultaneously.
"I've been going through this," Kristine said. "Marcus was writing about something. Something big. And I think he was close to finishing it when he—"
"When he died."
"When he was killed."
Caroline set the notebook down. "Do you want coffee?"
"Sure."
Caroline went to the kitchen above the shop, filled the kettle, and set it on the stove. She stood there while the water heated, watching the flame under the burner, and thought about the last six years—the six years since Marcus Webb had died in what the police called a hit-and-run on a dark road in Cuyahoga County, a case that had gone cold within three months because there were no witnesses and no surveillance cameras and a driver who never stopped.
Dave came into the shop at five-thirty, as usual, and found Kristine sitting at the small table in the corner where they kept extra inventory. She was smoking, which Caroline had specifically asked her not to do.
"Kristine," Caroline said from the top of the stairs. "No smoking in the house."
Kristine exhaled a plume of smoke and looked at Caroline with an expression that said: you can't tell me what to do. But she put out the cigarette anyway. Because despite everything, she still respected the boundaries Caroline set, even when she resented them.
Dinner was leftovers from yesterday—chicken and rice, which Caroline had made in quantity because it was cheap and filling and didn't require much attention. They ate at the kitchen table. Dave was quiet, which was normal. Kristine was quiet, which was unusual. Caroline ate and thought about the notebook.
After dinner, Dave went to the garage. Caroline watched him go—the way he walked with his hands in his pockets, the way his shoulders were hunched, the way he looked at the ground as though searching for something he had dropped years ago and never found.
She waited ten minutes. Then she followed him.
The garage was attached to the back of the house. It was small—just big enough for a workbench, a couple of shelves, and the metal box that Dave kept locked underneath the workbench. Caroline had never asked what was in the box. Dave had never offered to show her. They had four years of marriage built on a foundation of not asking and not offering, which was fine until it wasn't, and Caroline was no longer sure whether it was fine.
She stood in the doorway and watched him. He took the box out, unlocked it with a key that hung on a nail by the door, and set it on the workbench. He took out tools—an old wrench, a level, a tape measure—and laid them on the bench in a row. He stood there, looking at them, for a long time. He did not pick any of them up. He just looked.
Caroline went back to the kitchen and picked up the notebook from the table. She carried it to the garage and set it down beside the row of tools. Dave didn't acknowledge it. But she noticed that his hand moved toward it, just slightly, as though he could feel its presence even without touching it.
She went back upstairs and made herself a cup of tea and sat at the kitchen table and read the notebook from beginning to end.
It was the story of a man who had been collecting evidence for a year and a half about an illegal gambling operation connected to the Cleveland port authority. The operation was run by a group of men whose names appeared in the notebook over and over: V. Corso (47 mentions), D. Brennan (31 mentions), R. Kowalski (28 mentions). There were dates, amounts of money, bank account numbers, names of witnesses. At the back of the notebook was a list of phone numbers, some with names next to them, most without.
Caroline sat with the notebook for a long time after she finished reading it. She thought about calling Detective O'Malley. She thought about calling the police. She thought about showing it to Dave and asking him what he knew.
She did none of these things. Instead, she closed the notebook, put it in a drawer, and went to bed.
The next morning, she drove to the address in the notebook. It was a house in Lakewood, near the lake, with a rusted gate and a Mercedes in the driveway and a yard that was overgrown even for Cleveland standards. She parked across the street and sat in her car and watched.
At 8:00 PM, a man came out of the house. He was larger than Caroline expected, with a thick neck and a face that looked like it had been designed for violence rather than selected for it. He wore a dark coat and walked with a heavy, purposeful stride that suggested he was used to people moving out of his way.
He got in the Mercedes and drove away. Caroline sat in her car for twenty minutes, watching the empty driveway, and then she started the engine and drove home. She stopped at a gas station on the way and bought a bottle of water. The clerk asked if she wanted a receipt. She said no.
She drove back to the house on a Tuesday in April. It was raining—a cold Cleveland rain that seeped through your jacket and made you wish you had thought to bring a thicker one. She parked across the street and waited.
At 7:00 PM, the man came out. He did not get in the Mercedes. He walked down the steps, stopped at the gate, and looked around. His eyes passed over Caroline's car. She did not move. He looked in her direction. She felt her heart beating against her ribs like a trapped bird, but she kept her hands on the steering wheel and she kept her face still.
He crossed the street. He stopped in front of her car. He put his hand on the window.
Caroline rolled it down. The rain hit her face, cold and sudden.
"Can I help you?" the man said. His voice was low and flat, the voice of a man who was used to people doing what he asked.
Caroline opened her mouth. She closed it. She opened it again.
"I want the truth about Marcus Webb."
The man looked at her for a long time. The rain fell between them in sheets. His expression did not change. He did not speak. He did not move.
Caroline waited. The rain filled the silence. The wipers on her car clicked once, twice, and then stopped, leaving the windshield streaked with water that made the streetlights look like they were melting.
She sat there for another minute. Then she rolled up the window, started the car, and drove home.
At home, she made herself a plate of leftovers—chicken and rice from yesterday, reheated in the microwave. She ate at the kitchen table, watching the rain hit the window. She thought about the man's face. She thought about Marcus Webb, a man she had met once at a barbecue in 1997, who had laughed loudly and talked about his daughter's soccer team and asked her if she liked fishing. She thought about Dave, in the garage, looking at his tools. She thought about Kristine, smoking on the porch, carrying a notebook full of a dead man's last thoughts.
Tomorrow she would open the shop. She would sell furniture and tools and things that other people no longer wanted. She would make coffee that went cold. She would look at a ledger that never added up.
And she would carry whatever she had carried—that moment at the gate, that man's face, that rain—into the next day, and the next, and the next, without knowing what it meant and without knowing whether it mattered.
That was enough. It had to be.
