The Gilded Storehouse
GEORGIA, 1854
The cotton was brown and dead and smelled like old blood. Jim Calloway stood in the field with his bare hands, his fingers raw from pulling weeds, and watched the sun set behind a line of oaks that looked like they had been grown rather than planted.
He had been here three weeks. Three weeks since he touched the iron safe in his grandfather's abandoned barn in Mississippi and woke up in a field in Georgia, the year unknown to him, surrounded by people wearing clothes that looked like they had been made by hand and people wearing clothes that looked like they had been made to hurt him.
His left wrist bore a silver mark: the outline of a vault door, roughly the shape of a safe, pulsing faintly beneath his skin. He had discovered the vault on his second day, by accident, when he pressed his palm against the bark of a live oak and the world opened. Behind the bark was a warehouse: a long concrete room with fluorescent lights and metal shelves and boxes stacked to the ceiling, containing everything from a 1954 Ford pickup (too big to fit through the door) to boxes of fertilizer and antibiotic powder and a diesel generator the size of a small car.
Jim pulled the generator out first. It was heavy but manageable, and he dragged it back to the small farmhouse he called home, which was really just a cabin with a leaky roof and a porch that sagged on the left side.
He started the generator on the fourth try. The lights in the cabin flickered on: two bare bulbs powered by a machine from a century that had not yet been invented. Jim sat on the floor of his cabin and listened to the generator hum and thought: I am either the most important person in this part of Georgia or the most dangerous. THE DUVAL PROPERTY The Duval property was across the creek from Jim's cabin. It was larger, better maintained, and ran at a consistent loss. Miss Eleanor Duval ran it alone, which was already unusual. She ran it efficiently, which was unprecedented.
Jim met her on a Sunday when he crossed the creek to buy potatoes and found her standing in the general store's back room, arguing with the storekeeper about the price of fertilizer.
"It's not the price," she was saying. "It's the quality. What you call 'superphosphate' is mostly dust."
"It's what the railroad can provide at this season," the storekeeper said.
"Then I'll wait for a better season."
Jim cleared his throat. "I have fertilizer."
Both of them looked at him. Jim was a stranger, which in Georgia in 1854 meant either a gentleman in disguise or a runaway of some description. He was neither. He was a twenty-six-year-old man from 1954 wearing clothes that were clean but wrong and a look on his face that said he was trying very hard to appear like he belonged.
"What kind of fertilizer?" the storekeeper asked.
Jim went back to his cabin, opened the vault door in the oak tree, and brought back a sack of modern urea granules. Perfectly white. Perfectly uniform. The storekeeper picked up a handful and rubbed it between his fingers. His eyes went wide.
"Where did you get this?"
"It doesn't matter," Jim said. "What matters is how much you'll pay for it."
The storekeeper offered him three dollars per sack. Jim asked for five. They settled on four. Jim sold him eight sacks.
He took the money to Eleanor.
She was standing on her porch when he arrived, a stack of ledgers in her lap, her reading glasses perched on the edge of her nose. She looked up as he approached and set the ledgers down.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"Jim Calloway. I live across the creek."
"I know who you are. I'm asking what you are."
"That's a philosophical question."
"In this state, philosophy is a practical concern." She studied him. "You sold Mr. Henderson fertilizer that doesn't exist."
"It exists. It just wasn't here when he was born."
Eleanor looked at him for a long moment. Then she stood up and walked to the edge of her property and pointed to the cotton field. "That field produced twelve bales last year. Twelve bales on forty acres. My father produced forty bales on forty acres. What do you have in your hands, Mr. Calloway, that my father didn't?"
Jim looked at the sack of urea in his hand. "I have things that weren't invented yet."
"Can they be invented here?"
"If you give me enough land and enough time and enough--"
"--enough what? Slaves? Because I have neither the land nor the slaves nor the patience to pretend that I do."
Jim set the sack down. "No. Enough time."
Eleanor nodded slowly. "You're the first person in five years to say something honest on this porch. Let's see what you do with it." THE FARM They worked together. Jim brought fertilizer from the vault. Eleanor managed the fields. They planted more cotton than she had ever planted, and with the fertilizer, the cotton grew taller and greener and more productive than any farm within twenty miles.
By the end of the first season, the Duval property produced thirty-five bales. By the second, forty-eight. By the third, sixty-two.
Jim's name spread through the county. Not as a miracle worker, exactly. As a curiosity. A man from nowhere with a bag of white powder that made cotton grow. Some farmers came to look. Some came to buy. Some came to threaten.
Colonel Beauregard came on a Wednesday in the autumn of their second year. He was Jim's distant cousin on his father's side, a man who had made his fortune in cotton and slaves and the art of making both sound like a moral duty.
"Jim," the Colonel said, shaking his hand on the porch. The porch of the Duval farmhouse. Jim had not invited him. Eleanor had. "I hear you've been doing remarkable things with that farm of Eleanor's."
"I'm trying," Jim said.
"Trying is not farming. Farming is farming." The Colonel looked out over the cotton field. It was lush and green and heavy with bolls. "Eleanor tells me your method involves a special fertilizer. Where do you source it?"
"A supplier. Out of state."
"Out of state or out of time." The Colonel smiled. It was not a warm smile. "Jim, I'm not your enemy. I'm your family. Family looks out for family. And right now, your family is concerned about what you're doing here, in a state that does not look kindly on men who make slaves restless with promises of plenty."
Jim felt a coldness in his chest that had nothing to do with the October air. "I don't make promises to anyone's slaves."
"Your fertilizer is a promise," the Colonel said. "It says to every slave on every farm within fifty miles: this is possible. If it's possible here, it's possible everywhere. And if it's possible everywhere, then the system that holds this state together becomes optional. Optional things have a way of becoming obsolete."
Eleanor appeared in the doorway. She was wearing a dress that had been made for her mother and a look on her face that could have cut glass. "Colonel, you're trespassing."
"Eleanor. Always a pleasure." He turned back to Jim. "Think about what I said. Family looks out for family."
He left. Jim stood on the porch and felt the vault door on his wrist pulse, warm and insistent. THE VAULT The vault was Jim's sanctuary and his prison. He went there every evening after the fields were done, pushed through the door hidden in the bark of the great oak, and walked down the concrete corridor under fluorescent lights, running his hands along the shelves, cataloguing the contents of a future that did not belong to this place.
Antibiotics. Fertilizer. Tools. A box of steel plow blades. Three cases of bottled water. A tarp. A chainsaw with no gas. A first aid kit. A stack of blank notebooks. A flashlight with dead batteries.
He took what he needed. He always took what he needed. He never took what he wanted.
The slaves on the Duval property began to notice. They noticed the white powder Jim spread on the soil. They noticed the cotton growing taller and stronger than anyone else's. They noticed the man who walked among them in the fields, talking to them not as property but as people, and who, when a boy named Isaiah broke his arm, pulled a bottle of something from his pocket that made the pain stop in two days.
The whispers started. If this man could make cotton grow without us, what else could he make grow? If he has medicine that works, why does only the Duval farm get it? If his ways are so superior, why is he working the fields instead of owning them?
Jim heard the whispers. He understood them. But understanding and acting on understanding were two different things, and he was not a man who acted on things. He was a man who tried things and saw what happened and adjusted.
Eleanor understood him better than anyone. "You're afraid," she said one evening, sitting on the porch with him as the sun went down.
"Of what?"
"That this works. That if you give the fertilizer to the slaves, or if you build a machine that does their work, or if you do anything that actually changes things, then you're responsible for what happens next. And what happens next is war."
"I don't want war."
"Nobody wants war," Eleanor said. "They want the thing that war prevents. And in this state, that thing is an economy built on the backs of people who are not allowed to leave, not allowed to organize, and not allowed to understand that their labor has value beyond what their owner decides it's worth."
She looked at him. "You can change it, Jim. You have the fertilizer. You have the medicine. You have whatever else is in that vault of yours. You can change it. Or you can pretend you can't, and the system will change you anyway."
THE FIRE, 1863
The fire came in July of 1863. Jim was in the vault when it happened. He was sorting through a box of what he thought were farming manuals and heard the sound before he smelled it: a crackling, roaring, building sound that the vault door muffled but could not silence.
He pushed through the door and ran.
The sky was red. Not sunset red. Fire red. The barn behind the farmhouse was burning. The smoke was black and thick and smelled of gasoline and cotton and something else, something metallic and wrong.
Colonel Beauregard stood in the road with a group of men, all of them armed, all of them watching the barn burn. The Colonel looked at Jim and nodded, the way a man nods at another man when something unfortunate but necessary has just happened.
"Colonel," Jim said. His voice was flat. Empty. "What did you do?"
"I took what was needed," the Colonel said. "The Union forces are moving through the state. The Confederacy needs everything it can get. Generators. Tools. Metals. Things your-- supplier-- provides."
"You burned my barn."
"I borrowed your barn and returned it to its natural state." The Colonel's expression was almost apologetic. "Jim, this is war. In war, property is collateral. And your property was collateral for a cause larger than any one man."
Jim looked at the burning barn. Inside were three months of supplies from the vault: fertilizer, antibiotics, tools, food. Everything he had been saving for a moment that never came.
He looked at the slaves on the Duval property, standing at the edge of the road and watching the barn burn with expressions that were not quite joy and not quite sorrow but something in between: the expression of people who have been waiting a long time for something bad to happen to the people who owned them and feel complicated about it.
One of them, a man named Isaiah--the same boy who had broken his arm--looked at Jim. Their eyes met. Isaiah did not smile. He did not look away. He simply looked, and in his look was everything Jim had failed to do and everything he would never get the chance to do.
Then Isaiah turned and walked back toward the house.
Eleanor stood beside Jim. She did not speak. She put her hand on his arm. Her hand was warm. Her grip was firm.
The barn burned until it was nothing but ash and twisted metal and the smell of something that had been valuable and was now not. AFTER The war ended in 1865. The Duval property was still standing, but the cotton was dead and the soil was exhausted and Eleanor's money was gone and the slaves who had stayed were gone and the ones who remained were trying to figure out how to be free in a world that had not yet decided what that meant.
Jim stood in the field where the barn had been. The vault door on his wrist was still there, but when he opened it, the warehouse inside was dark. The fluorescent lights did not come on. The shelves were there, but they were empty. Everything the Colonel had taken was gone. Everything he had not taken had rotted, or burned, or simply ceased to be useful in a world that was moving too fast for anything he could provide.
Eleanor joined him. She was holding a shovel.
"What's that for?" Jim asked.
"For digging," she said. "The soil's exhausted. We need to turn it. Plant something else. Maybe vegetables. Maybe nothing, for a season, and just let it rest."
Jim took the shovel. He put his foot in the stirrup and pushed the blade into the earth. It was hard work. Harder than anything he had done in the vault or the fields or the barn. It was the hardest thing he had ever done because it was the first thing that was purely his: not borrowed, not stolen, not inherited, not given by a warehouse from another century. His own hands, his own effort, his own decision to put a blade in the ground and push.
He pushed. The blade went in three inches. Then five. Then ten.
Eleanor stood beside him and watched. Behind them, the horizon was a deep, burning gold, the kind of gold that only appears in the South in the spring, just before everything grows or everything dies or both.
Jim's vault door flickered on his wrist, just once, like a heartbeat. Then it stopped.
He did not look at it. He kept digging.
