The rain in New York does not wash anything clean. It just makes the dirt wetter. Sam Callahan knew this because he had spent twelve years as a cop walking these same streets, watching the rain hit the pavement and knowing that by morning the sidewalks would be dirty again. Now he was a civilian with a desk, a bottle of rye on top of it, and a sign on the door that said Callahan Investigations in letters that had been peeling since the landlord put them there in nineteen forty-eight.
She came in on a Tuesday. Tuesdays were for divorces and missing persons and the occasional case of someone's grandmother thinking she was being poisoned. This one was different because she was not crying. Crying I can work with. Crying means the person still believes something can be fixed. This woman was too calm for her own good.
"It is my son," she said. She was older, maybe sixty, with hands that had done scrubbing and wringing and the kind of work that makes you think about your children and whether they know how hard you have been. "He moved into an apartment on Broadway. Since then, he has not bought anything. Not food. Not clothes. Nothing."
"Maybe someone sends him money," Sam said. He was already reaching for the rye.
"He sends me money," she said. "But he does not spend it. He has everything he needs without buying it. And sometimes—at night—I hear him going somewhere. He leaves at midnight and comes back at four. He carries bags."
"Old people imagine things."
"I am not an old person."
Sam took a drink. "What do you want me to do?"
"Find out what he has."
She left a fifty-dollar bill on the desk and did not look back. Sam put the bill in his desk drawer next to a bill from the bar and a letter from his ex-wife that he had not opened. He did not make calls that day. He did not make calls for three days.
On the fourth day, he ran into Marlene at a bar on 42nd Street. Marlene used to work for a man named Victor Lang—Victor L., as everyone called him, because he did not give his last name to anyone and his last name, Sam suspected, was whatever he wanted it to be. Marlene was thirty-four, had been a flight attendant before a divorce made her available to anyone who could offer her steady work and a view of the city from the thirty-third floor. She looked at Sam like she was deciding whether to remember him.
"Callahan," she said. Not a question.
"Cross." Not a greeting.
"You look like hell."
"You look like you work for Victor Lang."
She did not deny it. "What do you want, Sam?"
"Someone told me Victor's son never buys anything."
Marlene's expression changed the way a window changes when someone on the other side pulls a curtain. Just a little. Just enough.
"Victor does not have a son," she said.
"Then who is the son?"
She drank her gin and set the glass down hard enough to make a sound. "There is no son. There is Victor. There is me. There is the building on Broadway and Thirty-Second. There is—there is a floor."
"What floor?"
"Between four and seven. The elevator goes there. The buttons do not show it."
Sam stared at her. "You are telling me your boss has a secret floor in his building."
"I am telling you that if you ask about it, you will not like the answer."
"Try me."
She leaned across the bar. Her perfume smelled like rain and something chemical. "He has a warehouse, Sam. A real one. Not the commercial space on the ground floor—the one that handles FedEx and UPS and people who need things delivered during business hours. He has something else. Something that is not on any map."
"And you work there."
"I work for him. That is different."
Sam paid for her drink. She let him. He did not ask again that night.
The first case started with a delivery boy. Nineteen years old, working for a produce company, said he delivered to Victor's building every Tuesday and Thursday, and every time he went to the service elevator, the display showed a floor that did not exist. He thought it was broken. Then one day the doors opened and Victor was standing there with a cart full of bottles—nineteen forty-five Burgundy, the boy said, he would know because his father drank Burgundy—and Victor told him to take them to the parking garage and gave him a five-dollar bill. The boy delivered them. They were real. He did not ask why a warehouse company needed wine.
The second case was from the building's super. Forty years in the job, he said. Never seen a floor between four and seven. Blueprints from nineteen thirty-two show four residential floors and three commercial. Nothing between. "Unless Lang built it himself," the super said. "In which case, good luck. You cannot build invisible space."
The third case was from a hacker Sam knew by the name Ghost because he looked like a ghost and talked like he was apologizing for existing. Ghost checked the building's power records. One floor used more electricity than the other eleven combined. "It is like he has a small city down there," Ghost said. "Or a small army."
"The son?" Sam asked, because some habits do not die.
"There is no son," Ghost said. "But there is something."
The fourth case was from a health inspector who had been ordered to shut down Victor's ground-floor operation for "unspecified violations." The inspector went in, looked around, found nothing wrong, wrote "pass" on his clipboard, and left. But on his way out, he passed a corridor he did not remember on his way in. It was long and white and lit by fluorescent lights that hummed like bees. At the end was a door with no handle. The corridor was not there when he looked back.
By the fifth case, Sam was drinking in the mornings. The sixth case made him stop.
A woman named Diane called his office. Her husband worked for Victor Lang. He had been walking home from work one evening and simply disappeared. No body. No note. No witness. The police asked Diane if her husband had debts. If he was depressed. If he saw anyone following him. Diane said: "He went to work every day. He came home every night. He never saw anyone. But sometimes—he would stand in the kitchen, holding a glass of water, and he would look at it like he did not know what it was. Like he was trying to remember where it came from."
Sam went to Victor's building at midnight. He took the service elevator to four. He pressed seven. The elevator moved. It moved past seven, past wherever seven should have been, into a space that the buttons did not know and the building did not want.
The doors opened into a corridor that smelled of concrete and something else—something clean and cold and old at the same time. Sam walked to the end. The door was there. It had a handle this time.
He did not open it.
He sat on the stairs above the elevator for eight hours. He smoked seventeen cigarettes. He thought about Marlene and about the way she had looked at him, like she was deciding whether to remember him. He thought about Diane's husband, holding a glass of water like it was a foreign object. He thought about the delivery boy with his Burgundy and the super with his blueprints and Ghost with his electricity records.
Six cases. Six people who had come close to the floor and come back changed.
At dawn, Sam went to his office, wrote a small advertisement, and took it to the newspaper.
LOST: One ring. If found, please say nothing.
He paid five dollars. The paper ran it on page twenty-three next to a recipe for meatloaf and an ad for a plumbing service.
He left his gun on the bar at the end of the week. Not dramatically. Just set it next to the register and told the bartender, "For the next guy." He changed his name at a desk in Penn Station using a birth certificate he had not used since he was a cop, bought a ticket to Chicago, and did not look back.
On the third day in Chicago, the paper had a small notice on page twelve: "Lang Storage relocating operations." No address given. No reason given.
The advertisement was still running. Page twenty-three. Next to the meatloaf recipe. Nobody called.
