What the River Bends Around

The sawdust smelled like hope. That is the first thing I remember about the bridge camp. Sawdust and coal smoke and the sound of men singing in languages I did not understand but could feel in my chest like a drum.

I woke up on a cot in a tent that belonged to the Louisiana-Pacific Bridge Company, on the banks of the Mississippi River at Greenville, Louisiana, in the year 1908. The last thing I remembered before the tent was cotton. Cotton fields stretching out in every direction, the sun beating down on my neck, my father's voice telling me to pick faster, the dirt under my fingernails, the feeling of being born into a life that had been chosen for me by men who had been dead before I was born.

I had been a sharecropper's son. Reuel Thibodeaux, twenty-four years old, tall and quiet and strong from years of picking cotton and chopping wood and carrying water from the well. I had never been anywhere outside Louisiana. I did not know what a bridge was. I did not know what the Mississippi looked like from the other side. I did not know that the world was bigger than the space between our farm and the plantation house.

But now I was here. And the bridge was real.

The bridge was a steel skeleton rising out of the river, two hundred feet tall, spanning the Mississippi like a finger pointing at God. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. It was also the most impossible thing. Steel does not grow on trees. Steel is made in furnaces by men who know things that I did not know.

But the men who built the bridge knew things. They knew things in a way that made me feel like a child who had been handed a book and told to read.

The first man I met was a Chinese man. His name was Dr. Wei Liang, and he was the chief engineer of the bridge project. He was maybe thirty-eight years old, tall and thin, with eyes that were intelligent in a way that made you feel like he was measuring you and found you adequate. He spoke English with an accent that was not from anywhere in America that I knew.

"You are Reuel," he said. Not a question.

"Yes, sir," I said.

"You are strong. You can read numbers?"

"I can read numbers well enough," I said. Which was true. My mother had taught me to count before I could speak, and when she died, my father made me count the cotton bales at the end of every day.

"Good," Dr. Liang said. "You will work with me."

And so I did. For the next eight months, I worked alongside Dr. Liang on the bridge. He taught me things that I had never imagined: how to calculate the stress on a steel beam, how to determine the load-bearing capacity of a rivet, how to read a blueprint and see the bridge before it existed.

"Math is the same for everyone," he said one afternoon, drawing a diagram in the dirt with a stick. "Steel does not care if you are Chinese or white or Black. Steel only cares about the numbers. If the numbers are right, the bridge stands. If they are wrong, the bridge falls. This is the most democratic thing in the world."

I did not understand what he meant by "democratic." But I understood what he meant by steel.

The workers at the camp were a mixture of white, Black, and Chinese men, kept apart by fences and customs and the unspoken rules of a society that believed in hierarchy the way a religious man believes in God. The white workers wore hard hats and carried tools. The Black workers carried materials and mixed concrete. The Chinese workers were the most invisible of all, living in a separate camp on the far side of the river, speaking a language that sounded like music to my ears, a language I wished I could understand.

Dr. Liang was different. He did not keep apart. He walked among all the workers, speaking to all of them, learning their names, asking about their families, showing them that he saw them as human beings and not as cogs in a machine.

"You treat them like people," I said to him one evening, as we sat on the edge of the bridge, our legs dangling over the river, watching the sun set over the water.

He smiled. It was a sad smile. "They are people, Mr. Thibodeaux. They are the most important people in this project. Without them, the steel is just metal. With them, it is a bridge."

The bridge took a year to build. One year of sawdust and coal smoke and steel and river water. One year of learning to read blueprints and calculate stress and understand the language of materials. One year of sitting with Dr. Liang in the evenings, watching the sun set, and talking about things that had nothing to do with bridges.

He told me about China. He told me about the revolution that was coming, about a man named Sun Yat-sen who believed that China could be modernized and strengthened and made free. He told me about the persecution that Chinese immigrants faced in America, about the laws that kept them from becoming citizens, about the violence that was perpetrated against them in towns across the country.

He told me all of this in the evenings, and I listened, and I understood that the world was much bigger and much more complicated than I had ever imagined.

"Your country is built on the backs of people like me," Dr. Liang said. "The rails, the bridges, the mines. Invisible workers, invisible labor, invisible lives. But invisible does not mean unimportant."

"I see you," I said.

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he said, "You are the first American who has ever said that to me."

The bridge was completed in the spring of 1909. The ceremony was attended by politicians and businessmen and ladies in long dresses who stood behind a rope and watched the workers file across the bridge for the first time. Dr. Liang was not invited to the ceremony. He stood at the back of the crowd, next to me, and watched the politicians cut a ribbon with golden scissors.

"It does not matter," he said.

"It matters," I said.

We stood there for a long time, watching the river flow below, and I understood that Dr. Liang was right and wrong at the same time. The ceremony did not matter. The ribbon-cutting did not matter. The politicians and the businessmen and the ladies in long dresses did not matter. What mattered was the bridge. What mattered was the steel. What mattered was the men who had built it.

In 1910, Dr. Liang returned to China. He kissed my hand, which was a Chinese gesture of farewell that I did not understand at the time, and he said, "I have built bridges across rivers. You must learn to build bridges across something harder."

"What is harder than a river?" I asked.

He smiled. "Human hearts."

The years passed. I stayed in Louisiana. I worked in factories and on farms and on railroad crews. I married a woman named Sarah, who was Black and mixed race and passed as white, and we had two children, a boy and a girl. Josephine, my daughter, was bright and ambitious, and I sent her to school in Chicago when she turned sixteen, because I wanted her to have a life that I had never had.

In 1919, the Red Summer came. Race riots in cities across America. I stayed in Louisiana, but I heard about the violence through letters and telegrams and the faces of the men who came through our town, their eyes empty, their stories incomplete. I held Sarah close at night and wondered what kind of country we were building.

In 1920, I traveled to New Orleans. I had never been to New Orleans. I had heard stories about it from the men who passed through our town: the music, the food, the French Quarter, the bayous. I went to see the French Quarter, and I walked through the streets, and I felt like I was walking through a dream.

In Chinatown, I found a small plaque on the wall of a building that had been a restaurant before it closed. The plaque was bronze, and it was inscribed in Chinese and English. I could not read the Chinese, but I could read the English.

I stood there for a long time, reading those words, and I felt something in my chest loosen, like a knot that had been tied too tight and was finally, after ten years, being undone.

The bridge still stood when I left New Orleans. I had walked across it in 1909, and it still stood in 1920, holding the weight of steel and rain and time.

I went back to Greenville and walked across the bridge one more time, alone, watching the Mississippi River flow below. I thought about Dr. Liang. I thought about Sarah and Josephine and the boy. I thought about all the workers who had built the bridge and were now forgotten.

The bridge stood.

That had to be enough.
