The Last Face

Act I

Chicago in the winter of 1947 was a city that had forgotten how to thaw. The lake was ice from shore to horizon, a flat grey sheet under a grey sky, and the wind came off it like a hammer on an anvil. I sat in my office on South State Street, third floor above a shoe store that had closed in '43 and would not open again, and I watched the rain pour through the window because the window had been broken since November and I had not fixed it. The rain made the desk wet. The desk was wet anyway. It had been wet since the roof started leaking in '45, and before that it had been wet from the pipe in the wall that burst in '44 and flooded my filing cabinet and ruined three cases I had been working on. Wet desk. Wet shirt. Wet everything. That's Chicago.

My name is Jack Mercer. I'm thirty years old. I have partial blindness in my left eye from Normandy—the surgeon at the field hospital did what he could, but the shrapnel did enough damage that the world through that eye is a grey blur, like a photograph left out in the rain. The right eye is fine. Brown. Good vision. Good enough to make a living as a private detective, which is what I do when I can find work, which is not often, because Chicago doesn't need private detectives in peacetime. Peacetime is for accountants and salesmen and men who believe in tomorrow. Chicago in '47 is full of men who don't.

I notice things. I have always noticed things. In the Army, in Normandy, it saved my life more than once. You learn to read a man's face in three seconds—or less—and know whether he is afraid or brave, honest or lying, alive or about to be dead. It is not magic. It is biology. The brain is a machine, and when you put it under enough stress, it starts processing information that it would normally ignore. Micro-expressions. Muscle twitches. Breathing patterns. Pupil dilation. All of it feeds into the machine, and the machine spits out a conclusion, and most of the time the conclusion is right.

In Normandy, I learned something else. Something I cannot explain and do not want to. When I stare at someone's face for three seconds—long enough to read the fear, the courage, the lie, the truth—I see the last person they ever saw before their death. Not always literally. Sometimes it is a face. Sometimes it is a shape, a shadow, a colour that the brain has coded as a face because that is what the person saw in those last seconds: the face of the man who shot them, the face of the medic who could not save them, the face of their friend who turned and ran. But it is always a face. And it is always the last one.

I did not understand what was happening at first. I thought I was crazy. I thought the shrapnel had done more damage than the surgeon admitted. I reported it to the psychiatrist at the base. He wrote down what I told him in a notebook and asked me if I had been sleeping. I told him no. He told me that was normal. He told me to take a sleeping pill. I threw the pill away. The faces kept coming.

After the war, I came back to Chicago. I had nowhere else to go. My parents were dead—my father from pneumonia in '42, my mother from the flu in '43, and I was in the Army for all of it, and when I came home on leave for the funeral, there was nobody left to come home to. I rented this office. I bought a second-hand desk. I hung a sign on the door that said "Jack Mercer, Private Investigations" and I waited for the phone to ring. It did not ring often. When it did, it was usually someone who wanted to know where their husband was or whether their wife was seeing someone else or what became of the son who joined the Army and never came back. I took the cases I could get. I solved the ones I could solve. I charged what I could charge. I drank the rest.

Act II

The missing man case came in on a Tuesday in March. A woman named Helen Voss came to my office, middle-aged, well-dressed, with a face that was tired but not broken—tired the way a woman's face is tired when she has been carrying something heavy for a long time and has not yet dropped it. Her husband, Robert Voss, had not come home in ten days. He was a dockworker at Lake Michigan, worked the night shift, and on the night of the twelfth, he simply did not come home. His employer said he had called in sick. His friends said they had not seen him. His bank account had not been touched. He had left no note. He had simply vanished.

I took the case for two hundred dollars. Half up front, half on delivery. Helen Voss paid me. Her hands were steady when she handed over the cash, which told me something: she was either very brave or very resigned. Looking at her face, I could not tell which. I stared at her for three seconds—a habit, nothing more—and I saw her husband's face. Not the face she described in her phone call, the face of a man who "worked at the docks and was friendly but quiet." I saw a different face. A harder face. A face with a scar running from the left ear to the jawline. A face that had seen things and not liked them and would not forget them.

I started with the docks. Lake Michigan is long, and the docks run most of it, but the active ones in '47 were concentrated around the South Side, where the warehouse district meets the water and the cranes stand like iron trees against the sky. I talked to Robert Voss's employer, a man named Frank Kowalski, who told me he had called in sick and I could see, in the way Kowalski's right eye twitched when he said it, that he was lying. Not about the call. About something else. I asked him directly: "Did Robert Voss call you, or did you hear from someone else?" Kowalski's mouth went dry. I could see it. His lips parted slightly, the salivary glands not responding, and I knew: someone else had called. Someone who knew about Robert Voss. Someone who knew he would not be coming home.

I asked who. Kowalski said he did not know. I stared at his face for three seconds. I saw the last face before his death. It was not Robert Voss's face. It was Eddie Corbin's face.

Eddie Corbin. The name meant nothing to me at first. I looked him up. What I found was everything. Corbin was the man at the center of Chicago's entire corruption network: police, unions, politics, docks, brothels. He controlled the Lake Michigan docks through the International Longshoremen's Association, local 181, and the union was his personal fiefdom. He controlled half the police through a man named Deputy Chief O'Malley, a Irish Catholic with a taste for whiskey and women and a weakness for men who held his purse strings. He controlled the politics through the mayor's office, a man named Thomas Delaney who owed his position to Corbin's endorsements and Corbin's money and Corbin's ability to make problems disappear. He controlled the docks, the unions, the police, the politics. He probably controlled the brothels too. I did not investigate that part. I did not need to.

Corbin was not a man you investigated. He was a man you avoided. But Robert Voss was my client, and Helen Voss had paid me two hundred dollars, and two hundred dollars in 1947 is a lot of money for a woman whose husband works the night shift at the docks, and when a woman pays that much, you do not walk away.

I found Robert Voss's body three days later. It was pulled from the lake off the South Side docks, weighted with a chain and tied to his ankles, floating twenty feet below the surface on a night when the water was forty degrees and the wind was coming off the lake like it had a personal grudge against the living. The coroner's report said drowning. The coroner was on Corbin's payroll. The coroner had seen Corbin's face the week before he administered the coroner's oath, and he had done what Corbin's face told him to do: say drowning, write drowning, certify drowning, and never think about it again.

I stood on the dock where they pulled him up and stared at the water and I saw Corbin's face. Not in the water. In my mind. Corbin's face, cold and flat and empty of everything except power, and the knowledge that power was the only thing that had ever mattered to him and the only thing that would matter when he was dead.

Act III

I went to see Corbin. I knew it was a mistake. I knew it the way you know a thing is a mistake before you do it, the way you know a car is going to hit you before it hits you, three seconds before the impact, and you stand there anyway because standing there is all you can do. Corbin's office was in a building on South LaSalle, ninth floor, with a view of the lake and a receptionist who told me I would have to make an appointment and I told her I did not make appointments and she told me Corbin did not either, which was a lie because Corbin made all the appointments, and then she picked up the phone and spoke into it and Corbin said, and I could hear him through the receiver, even from nine floors up, even through the static of a telephone line that had been tapped by the FBI and the Chicago police and probably Corbin himself: "Let him up."

His office was larger than most men's offices and smaller than a corrupt man's should be. Corbin understood modesty the way a man understands modesty when he is trying not to frighten the people he is about to swallow. He was fifty, grey-haired, lean, with a face that was neither friendly nor hostile. A neutral face. The kind of face that gets trust because it gives nothing away. I stared at it for three seconds. I saw the last face before his death.

There were many.

The first was a dockworker's face—Robert Voss's face, or close to it, pale and bloated from the water, eyes open and staring at something Corbin could not see. The second was a cop's face—Deputy Chief O'Malley, or O'Malley's face as Corbin saw it, angry and red and full of the kind of betrayal that comes from a man who thought he was loyal and discovered he was dispensable. The third was a politician's face—Mayor Delaney, grinning, shaking Corbin's hand, and I could see, in the micro-twitch of Delaney's left eyebrow, that he was planning to betray Corbin and would do it within the year. The fourth was a woman's face. I did not recognize it. Young, maybe twenty-five, with dark hair and a scar on her chin and eyes that were afraid and excited at the same time, the way a woman's eyes are when she is looking at the man who will kill her and the man she loves in the same three seconds.

I saw all of it. All the faces. All the deaths. All the betrayals. And Corbin sat behind his desk and watched me watch him and he understood, I think, that I understood more than I should have understood, and men like Corbin do not like men who understand too much.

"Something bother you, Mr. Mercer?" he asked. His voice was calm. Polite. The voice of a man who has never needed to raise it.

"No," I said. "Just studying."

"Studying what?"

"Faces," I said. "They tell you things."

He smiled. It did not reach his eyes. It reached everything else—the power, the control, the certainty that he was the most powerful man in the room and would remain so until the moment he was not. "I've heard that before. From a detective. Back in '38. He studied faces too. Stopped studying them after a month."

"What happened to him?"

"He got himself killed." Corbin leaned back in his chair. "You want to know about Robert Voss?"

"I want to know why he's at the bottom of the lake."

"Because he knew too much." Corbin's eyes were flat. Honest. The first honest thing I had heard from him. "He saw something he shouldn't have. Something about the docks. About the union. About me. He was going to talk. Men don't talk to the police when they know the police. They talk to someone else. A private eye. That's how the world works, Mr. Mercer. That's how it has always worked."

"And you killed him."

"I didn't kill him." Corbin's face was calm. His pulse was steady. He was telling the truth, or he was telling a truth, which is not the same thing. "I'm not the kind of man who gets his hands dirty. I have men for that. And those men are loyal."

"They're not," I said. "I saw their faces. They're afraid. Afraid men are dangerous. And dangerous men turn on each other when the pressure gets high."

Corbin's face did not change. But his right hand, resting on the desk, tightened slightly. I saw it. I always see it. "You're a clever man, Mr. Mercer. Clever men don't last long in Chicago. They last longer if they're smart."

"I'm not smart," I said. "I'm just observant."

"Same thing."

I stood up. "I'm going to keep looking."

"Go ahead." Corbin smiled. It was the first time his smile had reached his eyes, and it was the coldest thing I had ever seen. "I have nothing to hide."

Act IV

I did not go back to his office. I did not go to the docks. I did not visit Helen Voss. I went home. I made a whiskey. I sat in my apartment and I stared at the wall and I thought about what I had seen. Corbin's faces. The dockworker. The cop. The politician. The woman. All of them dead. All of them Corbin's. And Corbin sitting behind his desk, calm and flat and empty, believing that he was untouchable because he did not get his hands dirty.

But I knew something Corbin did not know. I knew that every man has a last face. Every man. And I knew that Corbin's last faces were already there, sitting in his office, waiting for him, patient as only death can be.

I did not go to the police. The police were Corbin's. I did not go to the newspapers. The newspapers were Corbin's. I did not go to the FBI. The FBI was nobody's and everybody's and neither would help me. So I did what I could do. I went to see Corbin's men. One by one. The dockworker who had pulled the chain. The cop who had filed the report. The union boss who had signed off on Voss's termination. I went to each of them, one by one, and I stared at their faces for three seconds and I saw their last faces and I saw their fears and I saw their betrayals and I went to see them and I told them what I had seen.

I did not threaten them. I did not blackmail them. I told them the truth. Robert Voss's face. The weight of the chain. The cold of the water. The certainty that Corbin would forget them the way he had forgotten the last man who knew. And each man, one by one, turned on Corbin. Not with violence. With truth. With the kind of truth that Corbin had spent his life building a wall against and had never realized the wall was made of paper.

The union turned. The cop turned. The dockworker turned. And Corbin, sitting in his office on the ninth floor, watched his empire dissolve the way an empire dissolves: quietly, efficiently, and without anyone noticing until it is gone.

I returned to my office on South State Street. The rain still poured through the broken window. The desk was still wet. The phone did not ring. It never does.

On my desk that evening was an envelope. No return address. Inside was a key—small, brass, unmarked—and a note written in a hand I did not recognize. "What you want is in the lake."

I lit a cigarette. The rain poured through Chicago's night. The lake was black and endless beyond the ice. I did not know what the key opened. I did not know what I wanted. But I knew, with a certainty that had nothing to do with the faces and everything to do with the life I had lived, that this was only the beginning.

I finished the cigarette. I blew out the lamp. The rain continued. The lake continued. Chicago continued. And I sat in the dark and listened to the city breathe, one more night, one more face, one more three seconds before the impact.
