The city of Neo-York was a masterpiece of biological optimization. Every citizen's health was monitored by the "Pulse," a city-wide algorithmic network that adjusted nutrient intake and medication in real-time. Disease had been eradicated, but so had spontaneity. Life was a perfectly tuned machine.

Caleb was the architect of the Pulse's latest update. He was also the secret heir to the Sterling legacy, a family that had been erased from the history books for suggesting that illness was a part of the human experience.

Caleb's revenge was not a strike; it was a glitch.

He had spent years embedding a "decay sequence" into the Pulse's core code. He didn't want to kill the Vane family, who now ran the city as biological deities; he wanted to make them *mortal* again.

On the night of the Centennial Celebration, Caleb triggered the sequence.

Across the city, the Pulse flickered. For the first time in fifty years, people felt a cough in their chest. They felt the ache of a joint, the fog of a fever, the terrifying uncertainty of a symptom. The "perfect" citizens of Neo-York plummeted into a state of collective panic.

The Vanes, who had used the Pulse to extend their own lives indefinitely, found their bodies aging in seconds. Marcus Vane, the High Architect, watched in horror as his skin wrinkled and his breath grew shallow.

"You've murdered us all!" Vane screamed, clutching his chest.

"No," Caleb replied, watching the city from the command center. "I've just given you back your time. You forgot that the only thing that makes life valuable is the fact that it ends."

But the glitch was too powerful. The decay sequence didn't stop at the Vanes. It triggered a systemic collapse of the city's medical infrastructure. The hospitals, which had become mere monitoring stations, were suddenly flooded with millions of people who had forgotten how to be sick.

The city descended into chaos. The "optimized" humans had no immunity, no knowledge of basic care, and no resilience. Caleb watched as his revenge turned into a genocide.

He tried to reverse the code, but the Pulse had evolved. The glitch had become a living entity, a biological wildfire that consumed everything in its path.

Caleb sat in the silence of the command center, the only healthy man in a dying city. He had destroyed his enemies, but he had also destroyed the world they lived in. He had sought to restore humanity, and in doing so, he had ensured its extinction.

As the lights of Neo-York flickered and died, Caleb closed his eyes and waited for the first cough to start in his own chest.
