The Tenth Floor

Arthur worked for a company called *OmniCorp*, a building of endless white corridors and humming fluorescent lights. His job description was "Optimization Specialist," which meant he spent eight hours a day moving digital files from one folder to another, ensuring that the flow of information remained perfectly stagnant.

Arthur had a plan. He had spent five years studying the social architecture of OmniCorp. He knew exactly which vice to exploit in the Middle Managers, which fear to trigger in the Directors, and which ego to stroke in the Executives.

He began his ascent with a series of "accidental" discoveries. He "found" errors in his boss's reports and "fixed" them in a way that made him look like a genius and his boss look like a fool. He cultivated a network of informants in the breakroom, trading secrets for loyalty. He played the game of corporate politics with the precision of a grandmaster.

One by one, the floors fell.

Floor 3. Floor 6. Floor 9.

Arthur was a whirlwind of efficiency and betrayal. He was the youngest Vice President in the history of the company. He had outmaneuvered the veterans, outlasted the sycophants, and out-lied the liars. He had reached the penultimate stage: the Tenth Floor.

The Tenth Floor was where the CEO lived. No one had seen the CEO in a decade. The legend was that the CEO was a god-like entity who had achieved a state of pure operational perfection.

The day of the promotion arrived. Arthur was ushered into the penthouse office. The room was vast, empty, and filled with a blinding, sterile light. In the center of the room sat a single mahogany desk.

Arthur walked to the desk, his heart hammering with the thrill of victory. He had won. He was the master of OmniCorp.

On the desk lay a single manila folder. Arthur opened it.

Inside was a photograph of himself, taken from the security camera of the lobby, dated ten years ago. Below the photo was a checklist.

*Phase 1: Identification of Ambition - Complete.* *Phase 2: Testing of Betrayal Threshold - Complete.* *Phase 3: Optimization of Ruthlessness - Complete.* *Phase 4: Arrival at Peak - Complete.*

At the bottom of the page, in a neat, typed font, were the words: "Welcome to Iteration 10,000. You have successfully proven that you are the most efficient version of Arthur. Please clear your memory and return to the First Floor. The simulation begins again in five minutes."

Arthur looked around the room. He saw a row of ten thousand identical folders, each containing the life story of a different "Arthur."

He sat in the chair and laughed. It was a dry, hacking sound that echoed in the empty office. He realized that his "ascent" had been the only thing the company actually produced. The files, the reports, the optimization—it was all just a game to see how long it took for a man to destroy everything he loved in the pursuit of a title.

He stood up, walked to the elevator, and pressed the button for the First Floor. He had a feeling that in Iteration 10,001, he might try to be a little more honest. But as the doors closed, he already felt the memory of the Tenth Floor beginning to fade, replaced by a sudden, urgent desire to find a way to impress his boss.
