I had read her papers on combustion chemistry when I was younger, and I remembered one sentence that had stuck with me: "Fire is the most honest thing in the world. It does not lie, it does not pretend, and it does not care."

Dr. Mercer was an old woman now, with thinning white hair and hands that shook slightly. She listened to me talk about my father, about the basement lab, about ten years of reading and thinking and trying to find a pattern that wasn't there. When I finished, she was quiet for a long time.

"Raymond," she said finally, "your father was a good man. He asked good questions. But the answers to good questions are not always good answers."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean that some things are true and some things are true, and they don't always fit together. Your father found something interesting—probably just a coincidence, probably just the way fire works when it has the right conditions. But he thought it was a discovery. And discoveries are supposed to mean something. So he kept looking. And looking. And looking."

"And?"

"And sometimes the looking is all there is. There is no discovery at the end. There is just the looking."

I went home that night and took my father's remaining notebooks from the box where I had kept them for seven years. I carried them to the stove in the kitchen and lit the fire. The pages curled and blackened and turned to ash, and I watched them burn and felt nothing.

Not grief. Not anger. Not relief. Nothing.

The next morning, I walked down to the Ohio River and sat on the bank. The water was brown and slow, moving toward the Mississippi and then to the Gulf and then to the sea. It carried everything with it—leaves, branches, oil stains, cigarette butts, the occasional dead rat. It did not choose what to carry. It just carried.

I took out a cigarette and lit it. The flame was orange and ordinary and beautiful in its ordinariness. It burned for three seconds in the wind, and then I put it out.

I sat there until dark. The river kept flowing.
