The Man Who Watched

I met Alistair Vance in a seminar room at NYU in the autumn of 1955. He was teaching a graduate course on the philosophy of mind, and I was the only graduate student who showed up — the rest had transferred to Professor Morrison's cognition class, which met at a more convenient hour. I stayed because Vance was speaking about consciousness the way a priest speaks about God — not with certainty, but with the conviction that the question itself was a form of prayer.

"Consciousness," he said, standing at the blackboard with a piece of chalk in his hand that he tapped rhythmically against his thumb, "is not a thing. It is not a substance. It is not the brain. It is the space between the brain and the world where meaning happens. And nobody — nobody — has ever explained how that space is constructed."

He turned to face me. He was forty, balding at the crown, wearing a tweed jacket with leather patches on the elbows that made him look like a character from a novel about a character from a novel. I sat. The seminar room had one window that looked out onto Washington Square, and through the window I could see the arch and the trees and the students walking between classes, living lives that had nothing to do with the space between the brain and the world.

Over the next three decades, I attended Vance's lectures. I read his drafts. I lived in his orbit like a minor planet, kept in place by a gravity I could not name. He published four major works. Each one was followed by a period of silence during which he would disappear for months — walking the streets of Greenwich Village at three in the morning, according to the landlady, or sitting in the reading room of the New York Public Library with stacks of books he checked out and never returned.

His great public moment came in 1968, at a symposium at Lincoln Center titled "The Future of Consciousness Studies." Vance faced Dr. Catherine Hale, a Stanford psychologist who represented the opposing school — the one that believed consciousness could be mapped, measured, and ultimately reduced to neural pathways. Vance won the debate. The audience gave him a standing ovation. The New York Times called it "the defining intellectual event of the decade."

I was sitting in the front row. I watched Vance's face during the debate, and what I saw was not triumph but something else — a kind of exhaustion, as if the act of arguing his position was costing him something he couldn't afford to spend.

After the debate, Catherine Hale approached him. "You know," she said, loud enough for the microphones to catch, "your theory is beautiful. But beauty is not evidence."

"I know," Vance said. And for a moment, just a moment, his voice sounded tired. "That's the problem."

He died in 1985, in his apartment on the Upper West Side. I was at his funeral — twenty-three people, most of them former students who had gone on to teach at universities across the country. None of them, I realized, seemed to know what Vance had actually believed. They quoted his published work back to each other like passages from scripture, each one selecting the verse that confirmed their own interpretation.

After the service, I returned to his apartment and went through his desk. In the bottom drawer, wrapped in brown paper and tied with twine, I found a manuscript. Two thousand pages, handwritten, in a handwriting that grew shakier as the pages progressed. The title, on the first page, was simply: The Question.

I read it over three sleepless nights. On the third morning, I found a note taped to the inside cover, in Vance's last handwriting — thin, almost illegible:

Tell no one. Or tell everyone. I cannot decide which is worse.

I am writing this note instead. Thirty years after Vance's death, I still don't know what he believed. I think that was the point. The question was the answer, and the answer was that there is no answer, only the question, repeated and repeated, echoing in the space between the brain and the world, where meaning happens, or doesn't.

I keep the manuscript in a safety deposit box at the Chase Manhattan. I have not told anyone about it. Not even the students I teach.

I am like Vance in some ways — the tweed jacket, the chalk-tapping, the pale blue eyes that fix on people with too much intensity. Sometimes, in the seminar room, when I'm speaking about consciousness, I catch my students looking at me the way I looked at him in 1955. And I wonder if they can see it — the exhaustion, the terrible lucidity, the shape of a man who spent his life building a door and found, on the other side, only another room with another door.
