The Whitfield Cycle

I.

The heat in Mississippi in August is a physical presence. It sits on your chest like a heavy hand and whispers that you should stop moving, that you should lie down in the dirt and let the worms find you first. Silas Whitfield was twelve years old and he was beginning to understand what his parents had known and why they had tried so hard to ignore it.

The Whitfield plantation was a corpse that had not yet stopped moving. The main house—three stories of peeling white paint and a wraparound porch that had once been the pride of three counties—leaned to the left like a drunkard refusing help. The cotton fields behind it were weeds and gravel. The outbuildings were collapsing one by one, the barn first, then the smokehouse, and soon the stable would go, and then there would be nothing left of the Whitfield legacy except the house and the thing in the cellar and the debt that sat on the family like a curse.

Esther, who was fifteen and already carried herself with the grim determination of a woman who had been forced to grow up too fast, was in the kitchen making a soup from beans that had been soaking for two days and water and a handful of salt. Sarah was sitting at the table mending a shirt that had more patches than original fabric, and she looked up when Silas came in and said nothing, which was her way of telling him that she already knew what he was going to ask.

"The bank called," Silas said.

Sarah nodded without looking up from her sewing. "Mr. Mathews sent a letter. Friday. I read it."

"what does it say?"

"It says that if the payment is not made by September first, they will take the house. Not the fields—they do not want the fields, which are worth less than the labour it takes to clear them. They want the house, because Mr. Mathews wants to live in it."

Silas sat down opposite Sarah and looked at the wall above the kitchen table, where his mother's portrait still hung despite the paint peeling around the frame. His mother had been dead for three weeks, of a fever that the doctor in town called pneumonia and Sarah called God's mercy and Silas called something he could not name.

His father had died six months before that, in a fire that the fire marshal called "accidental" and Sarah called "suspicious" and Silas called "the night before I found the journal."

The journal was in his room, wrapped in a handkerchief and tucked beneath the floorboard beneath his bed. He had found it in the study the day after the fire, in the desk that had not been completely consumed. It was a leather-bound book, its pages yellowed and brittle, and it told a story that Silas had read three times and still did not fully understand.

The story was about the man in the cellar.

II.

His great-great-grandfather James Whitfield had brought the man to the plantation in 1833. The journal did not say how James had found him—whether he had been wandering the roads near Natchez, or whether he had been living in the swamp like an animal, or whether he had simply appeared one day at the edge of the plantation property and walked toward the house with the calm certainty of someone who knew exactly where he was going.

What the journal did say was that the man had a name, or at least a sound that was a name, but no one in the Whitfield family could pronounce it, so they called him simply "the Man," and they put him in the cellar of the main house and they fed him through a slot in the door and they asked him questions.

The questions were about the weather. About crop yields. About the price of cotton in New Orleans. About whether war was coming.

The Man answered them all.

The journal recorded twenty-three years of questions and answers, and by the twentieth year, the questions had changed. They were no longer about crops or weather or prices. They were about life and death, about love and loss, about the nature of time and the meaning of suffering and the question of whether a human being has any control over the course of his own life.

The Man's answers to these questions were, according to James Whitfield, "beyond the capacity of ordinary understanding." James wrote that he could not record them fully because his pen could not capture them, that they existed in a space between words, that to write them down would be to diminish them.

But he tried. And what he tried to write was the most extraordinary thing Silas had ever read.

The journal also recorded something else—something that Silas did not fully understand until he read it a third time, sitting on the floor of his room with the summer heat pressing against the window like a living thing.

It was a list. A list of people who had visited the Man in the cellar over the twenty-three years recorded in the journal. There were forty-seven names, and beside each name was a date and a brief note.

Most of the notes said the same thing: "Visited on [date]. Left in good health. Returned to his community."

But some of the notes were different.

Three people "did not return." Two people "returned changed and never spoke again." One person "returned and died within the year, though the cause was never determined."

And at the bottom of the list, in James Whitfield's hand, was a note that Silas read every night before he tried to sleep:

"The Man is not evil. He is not good. He is something else. And we are his keepers, and our task is to decide when to open the door and when to close it, and we have not yet decided rightly."

III.

Esther came to Silas's room that night, after Sarah had gone to sleep and the house had settled into the creaking groan that it always made in the heat of August. She sat on the edge of his bed and took his hand and said, "You found the journal."

It was not a question.

"Yes."

"Did you read it?"

"I read it three times."

"And?"

Silas looked at his sister. She was fifteen and her face was already arranged in lines that belonged to someone much older, and her eyes were dark and determined and afraid.

"He is still there," Silas said. "In the cellar."

Esther closed her eyes. "I know."

"Mr. Mathews is coming on Monday. He wants to take the house. If they take the house, they will find the cellar. They will find him."

"They have known about the cellar for a hundred and ninety years," Esther said. "Mr. Mathews's grandfather knew. His great-grandfather knew. They all knew. The question has always been whether to open the door or close it."

"And we have never decided?"

"We decided once," Esther said. "When Father was alive. He wanted to open the door. He thought the Man's knowledge could save us. Mother said no."

"What happened?"

Esther opened her eyes and looked at the ceiling, at the water stain that spread across it like a map of a country that did not exist. "Mother was right. Father went down to the cellar one night and spoke to the Man for an hour. When he came up, he was different. Not mad—worse than mad. He was certain. He was certain of things that no human being should be certain of, and he carried that certainty into everything he did, and it destroyed him."

Silas felt the heat in the room grow heavier, as if the house itself was leaning closer to listen.

"Why are you telling me this?" he asked.

"Because you have to decide," Esther said. "Father is dead. Mother is dead. I am fifteen and I cannot run this plantation by myself. Mr. Mathews will take the house on September first unless something changes. And the only thing that can change it is the Man in the cellar."

She stood up and walked to the door and looked back at him with an expression that was half pity and half challenge.

"You have until Monday," she said. "Decide what to do about the Man. Or decide not to, which is also a decision, and I will honour it either way."

She left, and Silas sat alone in the heat and the darkness and the silence of a house that was slowly falling apart, and he thought about the man in the cellar and the journal and the list of forty-seven names and the three people who had not returned.

He thought about opening the door.

IV.

Sunday night, Silas carried a tray of food down to the cellar. He had not intended to go, but the heat in the house had become unbearable, and the sound of Esther's voice—"You have until Monday"—had played over and over in his head until he could not think of anything else.

The cellar stairs were narrow and steep and the steps were uneven, worn by generations of Whitfield feet descending into the dark. The air at the bottom was cool and smelled of damp earth and old stone and something else—something that Silas could not name but recognised instantly, the way you recognise the face of someone you have never met.

The Man was sitting on the stone floor against the far wall, cross-legged, his hands resting on his knees. He was old—impossibly old, older than anyone had a right to be, and his skin was the colour and texture of parchment that had been dried and pressed and stored for two centuries. His eyes were open and they were the colour of the Mississippi on a winter morning—grey and wide and full of a knowing that was neither kind nor cruel but simply absolute.

He looked at Silas and he smiled, and the smile was the most terrifying thing Silas had ever seen.

"You have questions," the Man said, and his voice was not what Silas had expected. It was not deep or resonant or ghostly. It was quiet and ordinary and it carried the weight of a hundred and ninety years of silence like a stone carries the weight of the water that drips on it.

"I have questions," Silas said.

"Then ask them. But be careful, because the answers will change you, and you will not be able to un-know what you are about to learn."

Silas set the tray down beside him and sat on the floor across from the Man and thought about all the questions he had and which one was the most important, and he realised that there was only one question that mattered.

"Will opening your door save us?" he asked.

The Man looked at him for a long time. When he spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper, but it filled the cellar like water filling a room.

"Nothing that saves anyone is free, Silas Whitfield. The question is never whether opening the door will help. The question is whether you are willing to pay the price that opening the door requires."

"And what is the price?"

The Man's eyes held his, and in them Silas saw the same vast, terrible knowing that he had seen in the journal, in his father's changed face, in the faces of the three people who had visited and not returned.

"That," the Man said, "is the question you have to answer yourself."

Silas sat in the cellar until dawn, and when the first light filtered through the cracks in the cellar wall and fell across the stone floor, he stood up and walked back up the stairs and into the heat of the Mississippi morning and made his decision.

The house was still leaning to the left. The cotton fields were still weeds. Mr. Mathews was still coming on Monday. But something had shifted in the space between Silas and his sister and the debt and the Man in the cellar, and he knew with a certainty that was both a gift and a curse that he would never be the same person again.

He walked to the kitchen, where Sarah was making coffee, and he sat down at the table and he told her what he had decided.

Sarah set down the coffee pot and looked at him with eyes that had seen a hundred and ninety years of Whitfield decisions, and she nodded once and said, "I will prepare the cellar."

And that was that.
