The smoke from the mill chimney rose like a black finger planted in the heart of the valley. Clara Beauregard stood on the porch and watched it. The sun was setting behind the cotton fields that no longer belonged to them, and the smoke twisted in the humid air like something alive, something that knew it was winning.

Below, her father directed the workers installing the steam mill. Colonel Beauregard stood with his back straight, his uniform still buttoned to the collar despite the August heat. He spoke to the workers in the same voice he had used to address his soldiers ten years ago. They did not salute him. They did not even look at him. They looked at the machine.

Clara turned away from the porch and walked into the house. The floorboards groaned beneath her feet in a rhythm she had known since childhood. Somewhere in the house a clock ticked. Somewhere a bottle clinked against a glass. Uncle Silas was drinking in the study again. She could smell the bourbon from the hallway.

She went to her father's study and opened the desk drawer. The mortgage papers were there, stacked neatly beneath a ledger filled with numbers that made no sense. She had tried to make them make sense for three weeks. She could not. The numbers said one thing: everything they owned was already gone. They were just waiting for the paper to catch up.

She heard the front door open. Moses stood in the doorway, his hat in his hands. He was a tall man, thin as a whip, with eyes that had seen too much and said nothing about any of it.

"Miss Clara," he said. "There is a gentleman asking for you. At the gate."

"What kind of gentleman?"

"He says he is from the university. He is looking for information."

Clara felt something tighten in her chest. "About what?"

Moses looked at the desk drawer. He looked at the mortgage papers. He looked back at Clara. For a moment, she thought he might say something. His mouth opened slightly, then closed again.

"He is in the parlor," Moses said. "He has been waiting an hour."

Clara walked through the house the way she had walked through it her entire life, past the portraits of men she barely remembered, past the furniture covered in white sheets, past the mirrors that showed her a face that was becoming unfamiliar to her. The parlor was cool and dark, the curtains drawn against the sun. A man sat in one of the chairs, his notebook open on his lap.

He was younger than she expected. Perhaps thirty. He wore a suit that had been good once and was now merely adequate. His eyes were the color of the Mississippi when it rained—brown and uncertain.

"Miss Beauregard," he said, standing. "I am Professor Whitfield. From Johns Hopkins. I am writing a study of the slave trade in the lower Mississippi valley during the war years."

Clara sat down. She did not offer him water. She did not offer him anything. "What do you need to know?"

"Everything," Whitfield said. "But I start with the Beauregard family. Your grandfather, Colonel Henry Beauregard, was one of the largest private slave brokers in the state. I am trying to understand how that worked. How a family—how a man—could do that and then stand here ten years later and pretend it never happened."

Clara looked at him. She looked at his notebook. She looked at the door.

"My grandfather was a businessman," she said.

"He was a man who sold other human beings for profit."

"Yes."

"And my father," Clara said, "sold his own mother's land to buy a steam engine that will not save him."

Whitfield wrote something down. He did not look up. "Did your grandfather sell anyone you knew?"

Clara thought of the stories she had heard as a child. Stories her mother told in whispers, stories her nurse told in songs. Stories that ended with children crying and mothers screaming and nothing anyone could do about it.

"I knew a woman named Hester," Clara said. "She worked in the kitchen. She had a son, maybe six years old. One morning she was gone. Her bed was made. Her apron was hanging on the hook. Her son was gone too."

Whitfield stopped writing. He looked at her. "Do you know what happened to them?"

"No," Clara said. "I never knew."

The silence in the parlor was heavy and wet, like the air before a storm. Outside, the steam mill clanked and hissed. It was a loud machine. It made a lot of noise. It did not change anything.

Clara stood up. "You can stay for dinner," she said. "But I want you to meet my father. He has opinions about your research."

Whitfield nodded slowly. He closed his notebook. He stood up.

As he walked to the door, Moses appeared in the hallway. He was standing exactly where he had been earlier, his hat in his hands, his eyes on the floor. But something had changed. His mouth was open slightly, and his hands were shaking.

Clara saw it. She saw everything.

That night, after dinner, after her father had retired to his room in a rage, after Uncle Silas had been carried upstairs by two of the remaining servants, Clara found Moses in the kitchen. He was sitting at the table with a cup of coffee that had gone cold.

"Moses," she said. "What did you tell him?"

Moses looked at her. His eyes were red. His face was wet. He had been crying without making a sound, the way black men in the South had learned to cry for a hundred years.

"I told him about Hester," he said. "I told him where they went. I told him the name of the man who bought them."

Clara sat down across from him. "Who?"

Moses looked at the ceiling. He looked at the walls. He looked at the floor. He looked at Clara.

"Colonel Henry Beauregard," he said. "Your grandfather sold my wife and my son to a trader in Natchez. My wife died on the boat. My son—he was sold again three times before he was twelve. I never found out what happened to him."

Clara felt the house around her. The floorboards. The walls. The roof. The land. All of it built on something she had never wanted to know and could never unknow.

"How long have you known?" she asked.

"Since I was a boy," Moses said. "I have known since I was a boy. I stayed because there was nowhere else to go. And because I wanted someone to remember. Someone with your name. Someone with your money. Someone who could—"

He stopped. He shook his head.

"Could what?"

"Nothing," Moses said. "Nothing at all."

The next morning, Colonel Beauregard stood in the parlor and gave a speech to an empty room. He was addressing an army that had not existed for ten years. He was giving orders to ghosts. He was shouting at men who had been dead longer than he had been alive.

Clara listened from the doorway. She watched her father's mouth move. She watched his hands gesture. She watched the man who had sold other people's families stand in a room full of mortgage papers and pretend he was still a hero.

When he finished, he turned and saw her. He straightened his uniform. He nodded at her once, as if to say everything was fine, as if to say the house was standing, as if to say the mill was running, as if to say anything at all could hold back the river.

Clara went to the desk. She took out the last mortgage document. She took out a pen. She signed her name—Clara Beauregard—in handwriting that was steady and clean and final.

Then she walked to the porch. She walked to the edge of the property where the Mississippi ran brown and slow and indifferent. She took the key to the main house from her pocket. She held it for a moment, feeling its weight, feeling the teeth of it, feeling the years of it.

Then she dropped it.

It fell through the humid air and hit the water with a sound so small it might have been nothing. A bubble rose to the surface. Then another. Then nothing.

Clara turned and walked back into the house. She did not look at her father. She did not look at Uncle Silas. She did not look at Moses. She walked through the parlor, through the hallway, into her room, and closed the door.

Outside, the mill kept running. It made a lot of noise. It did not change anything.
