The Rainless Night
The rain in Los Angeles doesn't clean anything. It just makes the grime slicker, turns the dust on the sidewalks to a thin brown paste that sticks to your shoes and your cuffs and the bottom of your coat. It meant someone had called someone she didn't want them to call, and that someone had called the phone company, and the phone company had complied because in Los Angeles, compliance was the only religion that mattered.
She sat at her desk and listened to the silence and counted to thirty and then got up and made herself a cup of coffee and sat back down and opened her case files. There were seven active cases.
