The Blurred Negative
I.
The dress cost forty dollars. Jessica bought it at a thrift store in Champaign, a pale blue thing with a fitted waist and a skirt that fell to just below the knee. She tried it on in the thrift store mirror and looked at herself for a long time. She did not see anything extraordinary. But the woman at the counter had said, "You'd be pretty in that," and Jessica had decided that was good enough.
The county fair was in October. The beauty contest was held in the gymnasium of the high school, and the prize was a plastic crown and fifty dollars. Jessica had seen the flyer at the Walmart where she worked, taped to the break room bulletin board next to the schedule changes and the reminders about proper hand-washing procedure. She had peeled it off, folded it, put it in her purse, and waited until the first of September to enter.
The entry form asked for her name, her age, her address, and her phone number. She wrote it all in her best handwriting, the kind her mother had taught her when she was seven, sitting at the kitchen table with a blue ballpoint pen and a stack of notebook paper. Her mother had said, "Your handwriting is your signature, Jess. Make it count."
Jessica made it count.
II.
Dale Hargrove's photography studio was above a hardware store on Main Street. The sign in the window said Dale Hargrove Photography in letters that had been peeling for as long as Jessica had been alive. She went in on a Tuesday afternoon, after her shift at Walmart, and found Hargrove sitting behind a desk that was covered in newspapers and empty coffee cups.
He looked up when she entered. He was a middle-aged man with a paunch and a face that seemed to have settled into its expression of mild irritation and stayed there. "Can I help you?"
"I want to have my picture taken for the county fair beauty contest," Jessica said.
Hargrove nodded, as though she had told him the sky was blue. "That'll be seventy-five dollars. Professional shot, printed on glossy paper. You'll look great."
"I only have fifty," Jessica said. She had counted the money that morning, three times, to make sure she had enough for the dress and the picture and the bus fare to the fair. Fifty dollars was all she had until payday.
Hargrove shrugged. "That'll have to do, I guess. Sit down."
He set up his camera on a tripod in the corner of the studio, a space that had been cleared of furniture but not of dust. The walls were covered in photographs of weddings and graduations and babies, all of them smiling at the camera with the bland, manufactured happiness that Jessica had always associated with professional photography.
"Smile," Hargrove said. He pressed the shutter release and the camera made a sound like a door closing. He pressed it again. And again.
"Shouldn't I look at the lens?" Jessica asked.
Hargrove was already looking at the viewfinder on his camera, his face half-hidden behind a black cloth. "You looked fine. Don't overthink it."
He developed the photographs in a small room behind the studio. Jessica waited in the front room, sitting on a plastic chair that had been left there for customers, her hands folded in her lap, her new dress feeling somehow wrong, as though it belonged to someone else. III.
The gymnasium smelled of floor wax and sweat. Jessica arrived at six in the evening, three hours before the contest, and found a parking spot as far from the entrance as she could get, because she did not want to be seen walking in early. She sat in her car and listened to the radio and tried to practice her smile in the rearview mirror.
She looked at the photograph from Hargrove's studio. It was worse than she remembered. The blur had gotten worse in transit, as though the image had been smudged by her thumb pressing against it in her purse. Her face was almost unrecognizable, a pale oval with dark patches where eyes should have been.
She put the photograph in the envelope Hargrove had given her and walked into the gymnasium.
The contest was being held in the basketball court, which had been cleared of hoops and bleachers and filled with folding chairs. A stage had been set up at one end, covered in red fabric that had seen better days. A panel of three judges sat at a table in front of the stage, their names printed on cards: Mrs. County Clerk, Mr. High School Principal, and a woman Jessica did not recognize who introduced herself as representing the Chamber of Commerce.
Contestants filed in one by one, carrying their envelopes. Jessica watched them, noting who wore makeup and who did not, who had helpfully brought a friend to stand beside them, who looked nervous and who looked bored. There were twelve contestants in total, all of them younger than Jessica, most of them in their late teens. Jessica was twenty-four, which was old for this, she knew. When it was her turn, Jessica walked to the judges' table and handed them her envelope. The principal opened it, took out the photograph, and looked at it. He frowned. The county clerk leaned over to look. The Chamber of Commerce woman leaned over too.
"This is very blurry," the principal said.
"I know," Jessica said.
"I'm not sure this is even you," the county clerk said.
Jessica looked at the photograph one more time. The blur was so bad that the face in it could have been anyone's. She thought about telling them about Hargrove, about the seventy-five dollars and the fifty and the camera malfunction. But something stopped her. Maybe it was pride. Maybe it was the memory of her mother's voice saying, "Your handwriting is your signature. Make it count." Her photograph was her signature, and it was blurry, and there was nothing she could do about it.
"I think it's me," she said.
The judges conferred in low voices. Jessica stood there, waiting, feeling the eyes of the other contestants on her back. Finally, the principal looked up.
"We'll let you participate in the contest," he said, "but we won't be using your photograph for the program. Is that acceptable?"
"Sure," Jessica said.
She walked back to her seat and sat down next to Becky, who worked at Walmart with her. Becky was twenty-six, married to a man named Gary who drove a semi-truck, and mother of two children, a boy named Tyler who was six and a girl named Sophie who was three. Becky had not entered the contest. She had come because her sister-in-law had entered and Becky had promised to come support her.
"How'd it go?" Becky whispered.
"Fine," Jessica said.
The contest proceeded. The girls walked across the stage, answered two questions from the judges, and received polite applause. Jessica did not place in the top twenty. Nobody was surprised. When it was over, the winner—a seventeen-year-old named Amanda who worked at the nail salon—was handed the plastic crown and the fifty dollars, and she cried, and everyone clapped, and Jessica went home.
IV.
Life continued. Jessica went to work at Walmart. She rang up groceries and canned goods and toilet paper and baby formula. She clocked out at nine, drove home to her apartment, cooked dinner, watched television, went to bed. The contest was forgotten within a week.
Becky mentioned it once, at the checkout counter, while scanning a case of paper towels. "Did you see Amanda with the crown? Cute girl. Shame about your photo, though."
"It was fine," Jessica said. And it was. It was fine.
Hargrove continued to run his studio. New customers came and went. He continued to take photographs and to ruin them, for people who could not pay and people who would not complain and people who, like Jessica, simply accepted the blurry negative as the truth.
Years passed. Jessica married a man named Randy who drove a truck for a living. They moved to a town two hours west of Champaign, to a house with a small yard and a porch that needed painting. Becky got a promotion at Walmart and became the shift manager. Hargrove retired and handed his studio to his son, a quiet boy who did not look much like his father and did not smile much either.
The photograph that Jessica had taken that evening in Hargrove's studio sat in a drawer in her old apartment, long after she had moved, long after the apartment had been rented to a new tenant, long after the hardware store below had closed and become a nail salon and then a vacant space with a For Rent sign in the window.
It was just a blurry photograph. Nothing more. Nothing less.
