The Algorithm of Flesh

The rain in the Under-City was not water; it was a chemical slurry that tasted of sulfur and old copper. Jax sat in a booth at "The Rusty Valve," watching the neon signs of the Gold-Sector flicker above the smog line. In the Under-City, you didn't have a name; you had a grade. Jax was a "Grey," a disposable asset in the machinery of the Five Syndicates.

Jax's job was simple: he was a Cleaner. When the Gold-Sector's perfect citizens produced "biological noise"—unwanted children, dissident thinkers, or failed experiments—Jax was the one who made them disappear. He did it with a cold, surgical precision, believing that the hierarchy was the only thing keeping the city from collapsing into chaos.

Then came the assignment: Sector 7, a hidden lab where a rogue geneticist was attempting to "elevate" Grey children by splicing them with Gold-Sector neural patterns.

Jax entered the lab with his silenced pistol drawn. He expected to find a monster. Instead, he found a room full of children, their eyes glowing with a terrifying, unnatural intelligence. And in the center of the room, he found a girl who looked exactly like the daughter he had lost to the Lung-Rot three years ago.

The girl didn't scream. She looked at Jax and spoke, her voice a perfect, synthesized harmony. "You are not here to kill us, Jax. You are here to be saved."

She showed him the data. The Syndicates weren't just managing the city; they were harvesting the neural capacity of the Greys to extend the lives of the Gold-Sector elite. The "elevation" wasn't a gift; it was a way to make the harvest more efficient.

Jax's world fractured. The loyalty he had felt for the Syndicates was revealed as a leash. He looked at the children—the "noise" he was supposed to delete—and saw the only real future the city had.

He didn't execute the order. Instead, he turned his weapon on the Syndicate's monitoring drone.

The retaliation was instantaneous. The city's security grid locked down. Jax became the most wanted man in the Under-City, hunted by the very drones he had once commanded. He spent the next three days fighting through the sewers and vents, protecting the children as they fled toward the Surface—a place the Greys were told didn't exist.

In the final confrontation at the Great Gate, Jax stood alone against a phalanx of Gold-Sector Enforcers. He was outgunned, outmatched, and bleeding from a dozen wounds.

"Surrender, Grey," the lead Enforcer commanded. "You are a rounding error in the city's budget."

Jax smiled, a bloody, jagged expression. "Maybe. But a rounding error is the only thing that can break a perfect equation."

He detonated the overload charge he had rigged to the gate's power core. The explosion didn't just open the gate; it sent a surge of feedback through the city's neural network, momentarily blinding the Logic Eye of the Syndicates.

As the children stepped out into the blinding, terrifying light of the real sun, Jax slumped against the wall. He watched the gold-plated world above them begin to flicker and fail. He died in the dirt of the Under-City, but for the first time in his life, he felt like a Gold-Sector citizen.
