The Infinite Corridor

The walls of the clinic were a shade of white that felt aggressive, a sterile void that erased the concept of time. Elias had been here for what he believed was six months. He remembered the accident, the flashing lights of the ambulance, and then the arrival of Dr. Aris, the man who promised to piece his shattered mind back together.

The therapy was unconventional. Aris didn't use drugs; he used narratives. He guided Elias through the labyrinth of his own memories, helping him identify the "glitches" in his perception.

"You are almost there, Elias," Aris would say, his voice a calming drone. "Once we resolve the final trauma, the door will open. You will be free."

Elias worked tirelessly. He faced the ghosts of his past—the failure of his marriage, the death of his father, the crushing weight of his own mediocrity. With every breakthrough, he felt a piece of himself returning. He began to plan his escape, noting the shift changes of the nurses, the blind spots of the cameras, and the exact moment the electronic locks cycled.

The night of the escape was a masterpiece of timing. Elias slipped through the ventilation shafts, avoided the infrared sensors, and finally reached the Great Hall. He could see the exit—a single, heavy steel door that led to the outside world.

He pushed the door open and stepped through.

He found himself in a room. It was a white room. There was a bed, a table, and a single window that looked out onto another white corridor.

He froze. He turned around, but the door he had just entered had vanished. There was only a wall.

"Welcome back, Elias," the voice of Dr. Aris echoed through a hidden speaker. "You've completed Cycle 14. Your efficiency in navigating the 'Escape Narrative' has improved by 12%."

Elias screamed, pounding on the walls, but the sound was swallowed by the sterile silence.

"The beauty of the experiment," Aris continued, his tone almost affectionate, "is that the hope of escape is the only thing that keeps the mind active. If you knew there was no exit, you would simply shut down. But as long as you believe the door is just one more corridor away, you will keep fighting. You will keep evolving."

Elias sank to the floor. He looked at his hands and realized they were trembling in a pattern he had seen before. He remembered this feeling. He remembered the exact shade of the walls.

He had been here before. He had escaped a thousand times, and a thousand times he had stepped through the door to find the same white room.

He lay back on the bed and closed his eyes. In the distance, he heard the sound of a key turning in a lock. He didn't move. He simply waited for the voice to tell him that Cycle 15 was about to begin.
