The Political Void

(Variation V-11: New York Urban/Power Play)

The "Crisis" had become the most profitable industry in New York.

When the Tri-Suns were first discovered, the world had panicked. But within five years, the panic had been commodified. There were "Apocalypse Insurance" policies, "Survivalist Luxury Condos" in the Catskills, and a dizzying array of political factions all fighting for a piece of the "End-Times Economy."

Marcus was the Chief Strategist for the Planetary Defense Council (PDC), but in reality, he was a fixer for the elite. His job was to ensure that the "Face-Wallers"—the elite few who controlled the resources—remained in power regardless of whether the aliens actually arrived.

"The key is the 'Threat-Cycle'," Marcus explained to a young senator during a gala at the Met. "If the threat is too low, people stop paying for bunkers. If it's too high, they start rioting. We need to keep the fear at a steady, manageable simmer. Just enough to make them compliant, but not enough to make them desperate."

The "Face-Waller" project, originally a desperate strategic defense, had been turned into the ultimate status symbol. Being a "Waller" meant you had access to the secret data, the luxury bunkers, and the promise of a seat on the few evacuation ships being built in secret.

Marcus spent his days manipulating the data. He would leak a "confirmed" alien sighting to crash the stock market, then buy up the dip. He would manufacture a "breakthrough" in defense technology to boost the PDC's funding, then quietly divert the money into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.

He didn't care about the aliens. He didn't even believe they were coming. To him, the Tri-Suns were just a convenient boogeyman, a tool for social engineering on a planetary scale.

But then, he met a whistleblower from the "Symmetry Project."

"They're already here, Marcus," the woman whispered, her eyes wide with terror. "The 'holograms' are real. The 'glitches' are real. They've already infiltrated the PDC. Half of the board members are just biological shells controlled by the Tri-Suns."

Marcus laughed. "Everyone's a shell, darling. That's how politics works."

But as he walked back to his office, he noticed something. His reflection in the glass wall of the skyscraper didn't move when he did. It stayed still for a fraction of a second, watching him with a cold, alien curiosity.

He stopped. He looked at his hand. The skin was shimmering, just for a moment, like a refracted prism.

He realized then that he hadn't been the one playing the game. He was just another asset being managed. The "Threat-Cycle" wasn't a human invention; it was a harvesting technique. The aliens weren't invading with ships; they were invading with greed. They had simply provided the incentive for humanity to destroy itself from the inside out.

Marcus sat at his desk and opened his laptop. He had a choice: he could try to warn the world, or he could negotiate a better deal for his own survival.

He looked at the shimmering reflection in the glass and smiled. He began to draft a proposal for a new, more efficient way to manage the "Apocalypse Insurance" premiums.
