The Alchemist's Star

(Variation V-06: Gothic/Medieval)

In the year of our Lord 1348, while the Black Death turned the villages of Europe into charnel houses, Brother Thomas sought a different kind of salvation. He lived in a secluded monastery in the Pyrenees, where the air was thin and the stars felt close enough to touch.

Thomas was not a simple monk; he was a master of the Forbidden Arts, a student of the Great Work. In the depths of the monastery's cellar, he had constructed a Great Astrolabe, a machine of brass and obsidian that could map the invisible currents of the aether.

For seven years, he had focused the Astrolabe on a single, flickering point in the constellation of Centaurus. He believed that the stars were the eyes of angels, and that if he could speak their language, he could find the cure for the plague that was devouring the world.

One midnight, during a lunar eclipse, the Astrolabe shuddered. A voice, cold as a winter grave and heavy as lead, echoed through the stone walls. It did not speak in Latin or Greek, but in the language of geometry.

*The Great Filter is closing,* the voice whispered. *Your world is a diseased limb. We are the surgeons.*

Thomas was terrified, but he was also enthralled. He believed this was the voice of a celestial judge, a divine entity that had come to purge the earth of its sins. He spent the next decade translating the "Star-Scripts," building a temple of obsidian to welcome the coming "Saviors."

He told the local peasants that the plague was a sign of the coming Ascension. He convinced them to give up their lands and their children to the monastery, promising them a place in the New Kingdom of the Stars.

But as the years passed, the "Saviors" sent more instructions. They didn't want prayers; they wanted coordinates. They wanted to know the exact location of every gold mine, every library, every center of power.

Thomas realized too late that the voice was not an angel, but a demon of logic. The "Ascension" was nothing more than a systematic inventory of a world to be liquidated.

On the night the first "Star-Ship"—a floating mountain of black iron—descended upon the monastery, Thomas stood at the altar, clutching his Astrolabe. He looked at the terrified faces of the peasants he had deceived, and then at the cold, shimmering light of the alien vessel.

He tried to speak, to apologize, but the alien light washed over him, erasing his voice, his memory, and his soul. As he was pulled upward into the black iron maw, Thomas had one final thought: the plague had been a mercy. It had killed the body, but it had left the soul intact. The stars, he realized, were far more cruel.
