Frank DeLuca was fifty-eight years old and he fixed radios for a living, in the sense that fixing was what he did when he could not find work at the pawn shop and the unemployment checks had run out and the house needed a new roof and the only thing he had that anyone might want to buy was his collection of old radios.

He was not a good radio repairman. He did not know why radios broke. Understanding was for people who had time to think about things, and Frank did not have time for that.

Frank did not tell her he had been hearing it for six months. Not just on this radio. On every radio. In his house, in his truck, at the diner when they played the radio behind the counter. It was everywhere.

He bought a second-hand shortwave receiver from an estate sale for twelve dollars. He sat in his garage every night with a notebook and listened. The tone was not constant. It had variations — subtle, almost imperceptible changes in amplitude and frequency that repeated in cycles. He wrote them down. Not as numbers. He could not do numbers. He drew them: little up-and-down marks on graph paper, like the rhythm section of a drum.

Six months of data. Three notebooks.

He showed nothing to anyone. Rosa, his neighbor, asked if he was okay. He said he was fine. He was not fine. The tone was in his head when he woke up. It was in his head when he ate. It was in his head when he lay next to a woman he had started seeing six weeks ago, and she thought he was distracted and she was right.

He took the notebooks to the community college. He found the physics building on a Thursday afternoon when he knew the offices would be empty. He walked into an empty office — a professor's office, probably — and spread the three notebooks on the desk.

He pointed to the drawings and said, "It's not random. It's not random and I want to know what it is."

The professor who walked in five minutes later was young, tired, and curious. He looked at the notebooks. He looked at Frank. He did not laugh. He did not tell Frank to go home.

"I need to run some tests," he said.

The tests confirmed what the notebooks showed: a repeating, non-random, non-natural signal embedded in the ambient radio spectrum of the Ohio Valley.

The professor published nothing. Frank went back to his garage. The signal continued. The professor was gone from the college the next semester.

The notebooks were in Frank's kitchen drawer. He did not talk about them. He did not need to.

He sat in his garage every night. He turned on the radio. He listened to the static.

It was his radio. It was his signal. It was his thing.

Nobody else knew about it. Nobody else would.

He turned the dial to 90.2 MHz. The tone rose, faint but clear, from the speaker. He closed his eyes. He breathed. He listened.

That was all he did. That was all he had to do.

The tone was there. It had been there for longer than anyone knew. It would be there after he was gone.

He did not know what it meant. He did not know what it was. He only knew that it was there, and he was here, and every night he came back to listen.
