The Crimson Echo

The walls of the Saint Jude Institute were a shade of white that felt aggressive, a sterile void designed to erase the identity of everyone within it. Dr. Aris watched Julian through the one-way mirror, noting the way the patient clawed at his own wrists whenever the word "red" was mentioned.

Julian claimed he was a victim of a grand conspiracy. He spoke of a woman he loved, a "crimson dream" that had been stolen from him, and a murder he had been framed for years ago. He begged Aris to help him find the truth, to dive into the fragmented memories of his past.

"I can see it, Doctor," Julian whispered during their third session. "A red dress. A garden. A scream that never ends. I didn't do it. I swear on my soul, I didn't do it."

Aris became obsessed. He used a combination of hypnotic regression and sensory deprivation to guide Julian back to the night of the crime. He wanted to be the savior, the one who could peel back the layers of trauma and reveal the innocent man beneath.

As they delved deeper, the "crimson dream" began to manifest. Julian described the garden in vivid detail, the scent of crushed lilies, the coldness of the blade. But as the sessions progressed, the narrative shifted. The "victim" in Julian's memory began to look more like a mirror. The "framing" began to look like a meticulously constructed lie.

The breakthrough happened in the final session. Aris played a recording of Julian's own voice from an early, unmonitored session. In the recording, Julian's voice changed—it became deeper, colder, devoid of the desperation he showed in the clinic.

"The red dress was a beautiful choice," the voice said. "It hid the blood so well."

Julian froze. The facade crumbled. The "victim" and the "accused" merged into one. The "conspiracy" was nothing more than a psychic fortress Julian had built to protect himself from the horror of his own actions. He hadn't been framed; he had simply forgotten that he was the monster.

Aris stepped into the room, his face a mask of clinical disappointment.

"There is no one to save you, Julian," Aris said softly. "Because the man you're looking for is the one staring back at you in the mirror."

Julian didn't scream. He didn't cry. He simply closed his eyes and drifted back into the crimson dream, where he could still pretend to be innocent.
