The Geometry of the Void

They did not have names, for names are anchors, and they had long since cut the ropes. They were simply A and B, two points of consciousness drifting through a white, featureless expanse that stretched infinitely in every direction. There was no sun, no moon, and no horizon—only a soft, pervasive light that cast no shadows.

They had been walking for what felt like centuries, or perhaps only a few minutes. In this place, time was not a river, but a stagnant pool.

They had found each other at the intersection of two identical paths, and in that meeting, they had discovered the only thing that existed in the void: the other. Their love was not born of passion or history, but of a fundamental, geometric necessity. In a world of absolute zero, they were the only source of heat.

"Do you think there is an exit?" B had asked, their voice a ripple in the stillness.

"There must be," A had replied. "We are moving. Movement implies a destination. If we keep walking, we must eventually encounter a boundary."

And so, they walked. They held hands, their grip the only thing that prevented them from dissolving into the white noise of the expanse. They talked about the things they imagined existed beyond the void—colors they had never seen, sounds they had never heard, the concept of "weight" and "wind." These imaginations became their shared religion, a mythology of the Elsewhere.

As the eons passed, the nature of their journey changed. The hope of an exit, which had once been a driving force, began to fade, replaced by a quiet, rhythmic acceptance. They noticed that the landscape, though featureless, was subtly repeating. Every thousand miles, they would find a single, floating obsidian stone, identical in shape and size.

"We are circling," B whispered one day, stopping in their tracks.

A looked at the obsidian stone, then back at the path they had trodden. "No. We are not circling. We are expanding."

They realized then that the void was not a place to be escaped, but a mirror to be filled. The "exit" was not a door at the end of a road, but a state of being. The act of walking, the act of holding hands, the act of imagining the Elsewhere—this was not the means to an end; it was the end itself.

The destination was the journey. The exit was the entrance into the realization that they were the creators of their own universe. Every word they spoke created a new star; every touch defined a new law of physics.

"If we stop," B asked, "do we disappear?"

"No," A replied, pulling B closer. "If we stop, we finally arrive."

They ceased their movement. They sat down on the white expanse and closed their eyes. In the absolute stillness, they felt the boundaries of their individual selves begin to blur. A became B, and B became A, until there was only a single, pulsing point of awareness in the center of the void.

They did not find a door. They did not find a world of color and wind. But as they merged, they felt a sudden, blinding explosion of light—not from the outside, but from within. They had become the horizon they had been seeking. They were no longer travelers in the void; they were the void, and the light, and the love that held it all together.
